What’s The ‘Hey Grok, Put Her In A Bikini’ Trend And Why It’s A Big Deal?

-

We’ve officially entered an era where AI is slowly taking over our lives. From harmless internet videos to scams involving deepfakes, AI has evolved to integrate into our everyday lives seamlessly.

What’s worse is that we’ve reached a point where it is tough to differentiate between reality and deepfakes. What’s unfolding today with Grok AI is a reminder of that very danger.

A viral AI trend has begun where users prompt Elon Musk’s Grok AI to put women in bikinis. What started as a minor misuse is quickly escalating into a widespread threat, posing serious safety concerns.

What Exactly Is The “Hey Grok, Put Her In A Bikini” Trend?

The “Hey Grok, put her in a bikini” trend is a recent viral trend where users are misusing Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot to generate sexualised photos of women posted on the platform X, formerly Twitter.

The AI chatbot is prompted with phrases like “remove her clothes” or “put her in a bikini” to generate explicit versions of existing images of users, including women and children, on X.

Grok GrokAI technology has been used to target women sexually for years. However, what makes this trend particularly alarming is that these explicitly manipulated images are publicly visible whenever a user tags the AI chatbot to generate them. This amplifies the harassment of the targeted subject, usually a woman, by placing her sense of security at risk.

According to a review by WIRED, about 90 images of women in bikinis and other objectified forms were generated by Grok in under five minutes. The article quotes an analyst, who refused to be named, who has been working on the study of deepfakes for years.

Calling it “wholly mainstream,” the researcher explained, “It’s not a shadowy group [creating images], it’s literally everyone, of all backgrounds. People posting on their mains. Zero concern.”

The same researcher reported finding 5,000 URLs of images generated by Grok and has screen-recorded Grok’s media tab on X. These numbers highlight not only the pace at which this trend is escalating but also the normalisation of such behaviour.

A Reuters analysis highlights 102 attempts made to digitally undress users in 10 minutes. Out of these, the AI chatbot was seen complying with an average of 21 prompts.

This trend is facing backlash from across the globe, as casual users as well as experts are strongly condemning the misuse. In a conversation with Reuters, Tyler Johnston of the Midas Project revealed, “In August, we warned that xAI’s image generation was essentially a nudification tool waiting to be weaponised. That’s basically what’s played out.”

AI Forensics reported that in its analysis of over 20,000 images generated by Grok between December 25, 2025, and January 1, 2026, it was found that 2 per cent of the media targeted users younger than 18 years, as well as almost 30 very young girls in compromised clothing.

This trend isn’t limited to common people only. Big personalities like Donald Trump and J.D. Vance, too, have fallen prey to the shackles of this viral trend. These deepfakes were initially used to create satire and parodically target public figures. However, with X getting flooded with explicit deepfakes, the joke seems to be getting out of hand.

The Global Backlash

The widespread misuse of the chatbot has garnered reactions from policymakers worldwide. Britain, Poland, France, Malaysia, and Brazil have raised concerns and regulations for the safety of their fellow users.

In India, too, the IT Ministry sent a notice to X’s chief compliance officer stating, “Grok AI developed by you and integrated and made available on the X platform, is being misused by users to create fake accounts to host, generate, publish or share obscene images or videos of women in a derogatory or vulgar manner in order to indecently denigrate them.”

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has directed the company to take stern actions within a period of 72 hours, as this is a matter of “grave concern” that can put the dignity of women and children at peril, “normalising sexual harassment and exploitation in digital spaces, and undermining the statutory due diligence framework applicable to intermediaries operating in India.”

The company has been further advised to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR).

According to The Indian Express, the company has been further directed to “strictly desist from the hosting, displaying, uploading, publication, transmission, storage, sharing” of such media, and that failure to comply with this requirement could lead to consequences like the loss of its “legal immunity from hosting third-party content.

Speaking about the situation, Priyanka Chaturvedi, MP, Shiv Sena, had penned her concerns regarding the matter to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stating, “There have to be guardrails put in place by features like Grok so that they do not violate women’s dignity. Big tech firms need to take the onus.”

Further, she added, “It is not just limited to sharing photos through fake accounts but are also targeting women who post their own photos. This is unacceptable and a gross misuse of an AI function.”

Elon Musk, who was initially seen engaging in the trend by prompting the chatbot to morph bikini images of himself humorously, later, on January 3, 2026, responded to the situation, announcing on X, “Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content.”

Furthermore, X’s safety team also added, “We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts.” Additionally, the team has also agreed to work with “local governments and law enforcement” as and when required.

As AI continues to evolve, trends like these serve as an example of the caution and responsibility that this innovation brings along. Stronger security regulations and greater caution are necessary to prevent exploitation that can harm millions of people.
