The recent controversy surrounding the cash found at Justice Yashwant Varma’s residence after a fire broke out has taken many twists and turns.
While the Delhi High Court ordered the withdrawal of the judicial duties of the Delhi High Court judge on Monday, the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, has also formed a three-member committee of senior judges to investigate this matter.
What Is This About The Burnt Cash Found At The Judge’s House?
On March 14, a fire broke out at the outhouse of Justice Varma’s residence on Tughlak Road, New Delhi. According to reports, around 11:43 pm, Justice Varma’s Private Secretary made a PCR call to report the fire.
Although Justice Varma was not present at his residence and was in Bhopal at the time of the incident, his daughter and mother were there.
Reports soon emerged that large amounts of unaccounted cash were discovered during this event. Videos and photos showing burnt currency notes were uploaded to social media. It was alleged that these notes were found near the judge’s house.
Furthermore, sanitation workers reported to have found burnt pieces of ₹500 notes while cleaning the road outside the judge’s residence. This discovery was made on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

What Did Justice Varma Say?
Justice Varma, responding to Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya, stated, “When the fire broke out around midnight, the fire service was alerted by my daughter and my private secretary, whose calls would be duly recorded. During the effort to extinguish the fire, all staff and members of my household were asked to move away from the scene of the incident for safety concerns. After the fire was extinguished and they returned to the scene, they observed that there was no cash or currency on site.”
Furthermore, in his letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court, he wrote, “None of the staff were shown any remnants of cash or currency that may have been present at the site. I have made my own inquiries from the staff present, who have also stated that there was no ‘removal’ of currency that was allegedly found on the site or taken from the premises. The only thing that was cleared was debris and what they considered to be salvageable. That is still present in the house and can be seen set apart in one part of the residence.”
He also claimed that this was a conspiracy against him, stating that this incident “clearly appeared to be a conspiracy to frame and malign.”
