What Is Communal Dining, Why Is The 2010 Trend Back Amongst Gen Z?

-

Whenever we think of Gen Z, we think of a generation that has been born into the digital age. We think of a generation that has witnessed the evolution of modern age connections, yet is deprived of real-life bonds. In an attempt to move past this social awkwardness and deprivation, Gen Z is bringing back a 2010s trend of communal dining.

This is the generation that has created its own normal. From redefining work culture to exploring spirituality, Gen Z is rewriting life according to what they believe is relevant and hits close to home.

What Is Communal Dining?

Communal Dining is the practice of sharing a meal with a group of people. This concept of eating together is believed to originate from ancient Rome. Over the years, with evolutions in the culture of socialising, this trend has seen its rise and fall. However, it is now being observed that Gen Z is reviving the concept of communal dining.

As highlighted by Forbes, almost 73% of Gen Z have reported feeling isolated or lacking friends, even though they stay connected to the world online. Gen Z, often seen as a generation that lacks real-life connections owing to the digital age they have been born into, is now bringing back this trend, where groups of people sit together and enjoy a meal.

According to Pablo Rivero, CEO of Resy and Tock, “Share plates have become the new standard, especially among Gen Z, and communal tables are the perfect setting for that — they naturally turn dinner into a shared experience.” This is seen as an effort by this generation to embrace actual conversations and build bonds outside a screen.

As per Resy’s report, “90% Gen Zers surveyed say they enjoy dining at communal tables, compared to 60% of Baby Boomers. For communal table fans, there’s a clear draw, and it’s the ‘meet cute’: 63% of respondents say communal tables are great for meeting new people.”

This shows Gen Z’s effort to encourage interaction and participation. Having grown up in an era of digital connectivity yet emotional distance, sharing a meal helps in engaging in wholesome conversations, ones without meticulously planned reactions.  A trend like this will help Gen Z come out of the slump of real-life isolation and promote social bonding.

This will encourage more authentic and natural in-person communication that will allow these youths to overcome the digital fatigue caused by being online all the time. Business Insider highlights Michael Della Penna, Chief Strategy Officer at the digital advertising research firm InMarket, as he explains how this trend could benefit “a notably anxious generation”.

“It’s especially comforting for some of those folks who may have felt like they don’t have the social skills, or are a bit shyer, or have been kind of digital-only for so long. It’s a safe step back to connecting and being social, where you don’t have the heavy weight of carrying the entire conversation.” Denna explained.

This throws light on how this generation is undergoing a shift in perspective, a slow change from unrealistic hyperconnectivity online to actual interactions. An approach like this frees the youth from the pressure of always showcasing a “perfect persona”, contrary to what they’ve been conditioned to do.

Business Insider quotes Ashley Mitchell, Vice President of marketing for East Coast Wings + Grill and Sammy’s Sliders, “Gen Z is driving a shift back toward communal dining because they crave experiences as much as meals.”

Another takeaway of this trend is that dining, when done in a large group, becomes more affordable. So, not only does sharing a meal make the youth feel included, but it also makes coming together as a group and sharing fun experiences over a good meal feel more convenient.

Today, Gen Z are in a quest to escape the long-lasting feeling of isolation and the constant pressure of being perfect. These young people, now, are embracing old traditions with a modernised approach, in such a way that face-to-face interactions don’t feel intimidating, and there’s a space where they feel seen and connected.

Why This Trend Works

For a generation that has grown up deprived of genuine bonds and connections, real interaction can feel overwhelming. These youths often feel alone in a room full of others because there are no likes or comments to validate their presence. Having grown up with reels and trends playing in the background, the silence of the real world can be quite uncomfortable.

This is exactly why Gen Z is embracing the idea of communal dining and trying to bring back this trend. It offers a much-needed introduction to the real world without relying on the validation of a few likes received online. It acts as a bridge, helping the digital generation connect with the world beyond their screens.

Sometimes, all it takes for a generation that has seen itself drown in loneliness and a lack of genuine bonds to feel truly present is a wholesome conversation without judgment, over a peaceful meal together.
