The Chandrayaan-3, the third Indian lunar exploration mission was launched on July 14th, 2023 by the LVM3 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
Entering the orbit on 5th August, it has been the cause of a lot of anxiety and anticipation over what will happen to it and whether it will be successful in landing or not.
As per reports, the mission is made up of lander Vikram and rover Pragyan just like Chandrayaan-2 and is said to be landing on the Moon on August 23rd, 2023. The whole aim of this project is to gain and develop new technologies that would help in interplanetary missions.
In the midst of all this, a cartoon shared by actor Prakash Raj went viral with it bringing him a lot of backlash and trolling for allegedly mocking the Indian scientists and achievements.
What Did The Actor Do?
On 20th August the Indian actor Prakash Raj posted on his social media a cartoon that showed a tea seller with the caption “BREAKING NEWS:- First picture coming from the Moon by #VikramLander Wowww #justasking.”
The cartoon was instantly taken to be very insensitive toward the Indian scientists especially former ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) chief K Sivan and a dig at the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
Twitter user @memenist_ wrote “Chandrayaan 3 is something whole of India must be proud of, irrespective of political ideology. Know the boundary between political vs national trolling, else stick to wetting your pants in movies.”
While @pallavict replied to his tweet saying “Are you so blind in your hate for Modiji that you are MOCKING the hard work of our ISRO scientists & made-in-India mission #Chandrayaan3 with Vikram lander named after Vikram Sarabhai, father of our space program?”

Another user wrote “This is tragically sad. The work of ISRO and Chandrayaan-3 are one of those rare things which ignites sparks of unity, passion and optimism in a billion hearts. If you can’t celebrate that, then your hate for an individual is more intense than your love for the nation.”
One person said that “Never let hate consume you so much that you begin to hate the progress, achievements, and endeavours of your country and your own people.”
The reason why some believed to have taken it in a mocking sense is that Raj has been a vocal critic of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, it seems that was not the intention of the cartoon at all, with some people coming forward to explain what the actor was referring to. User @RiaRevealed replying to the tweet wrote “Sir it’s a very old joke of a keralites having a tea stall in moon.. Its was nothing to do with Modi or isro. Bjp has twisted his words to put him in bad light.”
Another user pointed out that the cartoon was actually referring to a very old Malyali joke that took a lighthearted joke more on Malyayalis and how they can be found anywhere, even on the moon selling tea. He wrote “Those who know only hate will see only hate.
If it makes any difference, Prakash Raaj is referencing a joke (that predates anyone you feel he is insulting) about how we find Keralites in every corner of the world and how the first thing Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin saw when they stepped foot on the moon was a Malayali selling tea there.
This is a classic joke made by us Keralites about ourselves and we wholeheartedly accept and laugh about it for decades. Now, if you have to insist on sticking to hate even after it has been explained to you, that says a lot about you, doesn’t it?”
In fact, Prakash Raj himself clarified the meaning of his tweet after getting the backlash tweeting “Hate sees only Hate.. i was referring to a joke of #Armstrong times .. celebrating our kerala Chaiwala .. which Chaiwala did the TROLLS see ?? .. if you dont get a joke then the joke is on you .. GROW UP #justasking.”
