Chhattisgarh was the first state to recruit transgender police officers in 2021. Durgesh Awasthi, the recruiter, had claimed that the new addition to the state police force would prove to be the best cops as they were sensitive, had a high emotional quotient and knew not only about the lifestyle of the other gender but also how it was to be on the other side of the law.

In 2022, 9 of the 13 transgender police constables recruited in 2021 were inducted for deployment in Bastar, which is a Maoist-affected district in Chhattisgarh.

IGP Bastar P Sundarraj believes that the inclusion of transgender cops will send a positive message in the region. He also claims that it will boost the morale of the entire police force.

Riya Mandavi, one of the two transgender cops to participate, says that it is a proud moment for the entire transgender community. They go on to say that acceptance in the police force has given them dignity, respect, and a positive identity.

Chhattisgarh has definitely set a commendable precedent for other states. What do you think? Comment and let us know!
