In 1929, the world was plunged into the depths of the Great Depression, a catastrophic financial downturn that saw the US Stock Market lose nearly half of its value. As economies struggled, people began cutting back on non-essential luxuries, including premium coffee.

This downturn led to a surplus in coffee production in Brazil, a major coffee exporter. Faced with the need for a solution, Brazil approached Nestle to find a way to preserve the shelf life of their coffee.

Nestle’s Quest For Instant Coffee

Challenged with the task of finding a solution, Nestle embarked on an eight-year journey to develop the first instant or powdered coffee that could maintain the natural flavour of the coffee beans. Despite numerous setbacks, the persistence and innovation paid off.
