A Dubai princess is making headlines after she divorced her husband in a very public manner by posting it on her Instagram. There is some debate, however, on the post’s credibility and the procedural process of divorce within Islamic law.

Shaikha Mahra invoked the act of ‘triple talaq’ where in the Islamic religion, a partner or usually a husband can invoke divorce by declaring “I divorce you” three times.

Who Is This Dubai Princess?

On July 16th, Shaikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the daughter of the ruler of Dubai, made a post on her official Instagram declaring her divorce from her husband Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum.

She wrote “Dear husband, As you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce. I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you. Take care. Your ex-wife.”

This incident, which is called an “Insta-divorce”, where someone has divorced their partner through this social media platform comes just months after the couple welcomed their first child a girl. Before this, the Dubai princess had posted a picture of her and her daughter with the caption “Just the two of us,” and a heart emoji that had a lot of people speculating things.

So far, Shaikha Mahra’s husband, Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum, her father, and the Dubai government have made no official statements. However, Shaikha Mahra has reportedly deleted all pictures of her husband from her Instagram account, similar to Sheikh Mana’s account also being void of his wife’s presence as well as both having unfollowed each other on social media.

Shaikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Rashid Al Maktoum is one of the 26 children of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who is also the vice-president and the Prime Minister of the UAE (United Arab Emirates).

Shaikha Mahra has a degree in International Relations from a UK university and also studied at the Mohammed bin Rashid Government Administration College. She gained recognition for her support of women’s empowerment and for promoting local UAE designers.

Shaikha Mahra got married to Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum last year on 28th May 2023 in a traditional but lavish Islamic wedding ceremony called Katb Ab-Kitab and gave birth to her daughter named Mahra in May 2024.

Shaikha Mahra’s mother, Zoe Grigorakos, comes from Greece, giving her Emirati and Greek origins, although the Dubai ruler later divorced Grigorakos. Shaikha Mahra, however, has described her mother as “my everything” and loves her a lot, featuring her often on her social media.

Shaikha Mahra is also an avid animal lover, especially camels and horses. She also graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia for their January edition this year.
