The Top Sports Stories Of The Week

In Sports, history is made every day. Here are the top stories of the past week:

» South Africa beat India in the first T20

» 2016 Formula One season to start earlier

» Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis win another title

» The Indian Super League second season starts

Cricket: Chokes apart, yes quite literally, South Africa beat India in the first T20. The visitors won the toss and put the hosts into bat who put 199 on the board. That score on that pitch on that day was never going to be enough… and it wasn’t. The Proteas got off to a steady start, and despite a temporary slump in the middle of the innings, they came back on track and took it down to the wire, finishing on the winning side in the end. They now have a 1-0 lead in the three match series. Not a great start, but if there is anything we know about this format of the game, it is the unpredictability.

Formula One: Good news for all Formula One fans- two weeks have been struck off your long wait from November to April for the new season to begin this time round! Officials have announced that the 2016 season will begin on 20th March instead of 3rd April as planned earlier. Good for us… and yes for the players too, who had complained of a crammed schedule, and fairly so. Although, I thought they would be the last ones to have a problem with the fast pace of something.

Tennis: The mind-blowing duo of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis recently won the Wuhan Open and registered their seventh doubles title of 2015! They won the final match in straight sets, and not only that, they did not drop a single set in the entire tournament. These girls definitely like to swing! Next on their map is Beijing, where they will be competing in the China Open as the top seed.

Just to refresh your memory, Athletico de Kolkata had won the inaugural season of the league last year. Will they be able to defend their title? Keep your eyes glued to the television and we will find out soon! So come on India, let’s football!
