All of us have considered the idea of moving abroad, at least once in our lifetime. Be it to pursue higher education, a better job or a higher standard of living; the thought to leave it all and start afresh in a new environment, has come into our minds.

Few daring ones plunge into such opportunities while some find comfort where they already are. A recent post by a techie has sparked such a conversation once again.

What Did The Techie Say?

A 23-year-old IT engineer earning Rs 1 lakh a month, has sparked a debate by his post on Reddit.

The man expressed his FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) by saying that he felt that he was missing out on a lot of opportunities in comparison to his friends who have moved abroad for higher studies. “I think I earn pretty well but I still have an inferior feeling in myself that I’m not doing well,” he said.

He admitted that viewing the lives of his friends on social media has triggered feelings of jealousy and uncertainty in him. He asked, “This is because I see my friends doing higher studies abroad, and their stories and posts make me jealous, to be honest. Is staying in India inferior to settling abroad?”

He also conveyed his surety of getting a better and high-paying job in India itself but also revealed his doubts about whether he will ever be able to enjoy the same living standards in this country as he surely might be abroad.

If I wish, I can study well and jump to a high-paying job in India, and I’m pretty confident I’ll do it. Still, I feel I won’t get the infrastructure or the standard of living I will get abroad,” he added.

The confusion in the post’s author revolves around his dilemma of whether he is underperforming because of his choice to stay here. Despite his comfortable and stable income, peer pressure is making him rethink his decisions.

I don’t wish to go to other countries and study, leaving a good job and all other things here, but the social pressure is making me feel inferior,” he continued.

What Is The Reaction Of The Netizens Like?

The engineer’s post received more than 350 upvotes and some mixed responses. One of the netizens said that social media platforms do business by inducing FOMO into people and he must conduct risk analysis before taking a big step.

Social media is designed to give you FOMO… Jealousy is the bread and butter of Insta… Higher studies abroad do have their benefits but they come at a significant cost. Everyone wants to show off and hide the struggles.” said the user.

At least ur close to your family, and earning 1lakh is great, ur already earning someone’s dream salary, and moving abroad coz of friends stories and all is not a good idea,” said another.

Try getting a job directly without going through a master’s program. Regardless of the pay, it’s still better to experience foreign countries, especially while you’re at your peak physically,” advised a user.

No. Uninstall Instagram instead,” recommended a fourth. The upvotes on this comment surpassed those on the actual post itself.

This social media discussion indicates how social media instills self-doubt among its users. As the netizens correctly pointed out, the situation of every individual is different and one must not take a vital step in their life just based on what they see on such platforms.
