The 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections recently concluded and the results were somehow both shocking and expected at the same time. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is as expected boasting their win everywhere, one person is being hailed as the entire reason why AAP failed in this election. That person is not even from the BJP though, and is AAP leader Swati Maliwal herself.
The BJP got their first win in Delhi assembly elections in 27 years, securing 48 out of the 70 seats while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) party which had maintained a hold over the state for almost ten years got only 22 seats.
However, amid all this, Swati Maliwal has emerged as a major reason for the AAP’s defeat, considering her aggressive and passionate campaign, in which she called out the party for its failures in Delhi and inability to fulfil its promises to the people.
What Happened?
Things deteriorated between Swati Maliwal and her party when in May 2024, Swati Maliwal made shocking allegations that Kejriwal’s personal assistant, Bibhav Kumar assaulted and abused her, slapping, punching and even dragging her across the room.
She claimed that all this happened when she went to meet the former CM at his official residence and that her calls for help also went unanswered.
However, AAP leader Atishi’s dismissal of Maliwal’s allegations a few days later, and the reaction of other party leaders isolated Maliwal in her own party. According to reports, some accused Maliwal of secretly working for the BJP while others asked her to resign as she was being negative to her own party.
Active Anti-AAP Campaign
Over the year and till yet she has been carrying out an aggressive campaign where she has pointed out the many civic issues Delhi is dealing with and how AAP has not fulfilled many of the promises it had made to the people.
Swati Maliwal and the media that followed her documented her wading through piles of garbage, water-logged streets, dirty water in houses, and more.
She posted all this on her social media and even made appearances in front of Kejriwal’s official residence with either garbage or toxic water from the Yamuna.
As per an ANI report, she said, “Arvind Kejriwal has turned the Yamuna into a drain. Black, dirty, rotten water is flowing in Yamuna. The river is on a ventilator, while Arvind Kejriwal is in his palace, roaming around in luxurious cars. Thousands of women from Purvanchal have come here to challenge him—he should not be so scared of women. He should come out, take a dip in the dirty water of Yamuna, and take a sip of that water.”
The former chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DC) has also been constantly using her social media to launch attacks against the party and calling out their performance in other elections.
About AAP’s performance in the Haryana Assembly elections, she posted on her X/Twitter that “He came to Haryana only to take revenge on Congress. He falsely accused me of being a BJP agent, and today he himself is betraying the India Alliance and cutting off the votes of INC!”

Praying At Hanuman Mandir
Maliwal also visited the Hanuman Temple in Delhi’s Connaught Place on Sunday after the election results. Speaking to the reports she said, “The last year has been the most difficult year of my life. In this entire year, only God has helped us. We have fought this battle alone, and I believe that no matter how big the evil is, or how powerful it is, it ultimately has to bow down to the truth.”
She further said, “Today, it is because of God’s blessings that we are alive and able to fight for the truth. The people in front of us have a lot of power, money, and authority, but I have fought alone. God is with me and will remain with me in the future too. Evil does not have enough power to make the truth bow down.”
Calling Atishi’s Dance Shameless
She also criticised the celebration by outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Atishi of her victory in the Kalkaji constituency. Swati Maliwal shared a video on her X/Twitter page in which Ms Atishi is seen dancing and celebrating her win in the Kalkaji Assembly seat, which she won by a margin of 3,521 votes.
However, to this Maliwal commented, “What kind of shameless display is this? The party lost, all the big leaders lost and Atishi Marlena is celebrating like this?”
Soon after the Election Commission revealed the win of the BJP over AAP in the Delhi Assembly elections, Maliwal shared an image on X/Twitter showing the ‘cheer-haran’ of Draupadi. This is taken to be a reference to her alleged assault by former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s PA Bibhav Kumar, and the eventual drama that followed it.
In an Economic Times report, she also compared Kejriwal to Ravan, the mythological character, saying, “Ego and pride don’t last long. Even Ravan’s pride was shattered, but then again he is only Arvind Kejriwal.”
She further explained why this defeat was not a surprise saying, “Today, Delhi has become dustbin…It’s because of the issues like water pollution, air pollution and the condition of the streets, that Arvind Kejriwal himself has lost his seat.”
She also said, “They (AAP) think that they can lie and people will believe in them… People should do what they say but our (AAP) leadership forgot that and deviated from what they used to say.”
