India is no stranger to colourism, we all know how much our country’s people love fair skin. It is their absolute ultimate goal to lighten their skin colour and in turn get all the joys of life that only people with fair skin are allowed to have.
Suhana Khan, daughter of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, highlighted this very mentality in her recent post on Instagram.
On Tuesday, she posted a bunch of screenshots of comments that she had gotten on her social media, where people would call her ‘kaali’ which means a black person in Hindi, as a way to insult her.
In her post, she talked about how she has been constantly getting targetted over her skin tone and even if she appears slightly lighter in colour, people take that as a means to make fun of her again.

What Did Suhana Khan Say?
The 20-year-old Suhana Khan posted on her Instagram, calling out people who had mocked or insulted her by calling her ‘kaali’.

In her post, she wrote that “There’s a lot going on right now and this is one of the issues we need to fix!! this isn’t just about me, it’s about every young girl/boy who has grown up feeling inferior for absolutely no reason. Here are just a few of the comments made about my appearance.”
She further added that “I’ve been told I’m ugly because of my skin tone, by full grown men and women, since I was 12 years old. Other than the fact that these are actual adults, what’s sad is that we are all indian, which automatically makes us brown – yes we come in different shades but no matter how much you try to distance yourself from the melanin, you just can’t.”
She ended her post by saying, “Hating on your own people just means that you are painfully insecure. I’m sorry if social media, Indian matchmaking or even your own families have convinced you, that if you’re not 5″7 and fair you’re not beautiful. I hope it helps to know that I’m 5″3 and brown and I am extremely happy about it and you should be too. #endcolourism.”
