Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT and OpenAI’s CEO is no stranger to controversies. Usually, though they are related to concerns regarding his platforms and the privacy invasion and unethical collection of data that they are accused of.
However, recently Altman has been under the radar after his sister filed a lawsuit against him that accused him of abusing her financially and sexually.
What Has Sam Altman’s Sister Accused Him Of?
On January 6, 2025, a lawsuit was filed in US district court in the Eastern District of Missouri against Sam Altman by his sister Ann Altman. The lawsuit claimed that Sam had been regularly sexually abusing his sister since she was 3 years old and Sam 12 years old, alleging the timeline of this abuse to be between 1997 and 2006.
As per the lawsuit the abuse is said to have occurred at their family home located in suburban Clayton, Missouri.
According to a BBC report, among Ms Altman’s claims was that her brother “groomed and manipulated” along with performing sexual acts on her that included “rape, sexual assault, molestation, sodomy, and battery”, for several years.
The victim has also said that she sustained “great bodily injury” along with “experienced PTSD, severe emotional distress, mental anguish and depression, which is expected to continue into the future,” due to this abuse that occurred “several times per week”.
The lawsuit also adds that the medical and mental health treatment for the abuse led to her running up several medical bills.
The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and damages and punitive damages exceeding $75,000 as per reports.
Ms Altman’s Illinois-based lawyer, Ryan Mahoney, spoke with the Wall Street Journal and claimed that his client had suffered from trauma and that “There is no evidence that her own mental health has contributed to her allegations.”

However, Sam Altman denied the allegation, posting a statement on X/Twitter: “My sister has filed a lawsuit against me. Here is a statement from my mom, brothers, and me”.
The statement starts off with Altman writing “Our family loves Annie and is very concerned about her well-being. Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult. We know many families facing similar struggles understand this well.”
The statement further expands on how Altman and his family have tried to support Annie even giving her financial assistance stating “Over the years, we’ve tried in many ways to support Annie and help her find stability, following professional advice on how to be supportive without enabling harmful behaviors. To give a sense of our efforts, we have given her monthly financial support, directly paid her bills, covered her rent, helped her find employment opportunities, attempted to get her medical help, and have offered to buy her a house through a trust (so that she would have a secure place to live, but not be able to sell it immediately). Via our late father’s estate, Annie receives monthly financial support, which we expect to continue for the rest of her life.”
It then says “Despite this, Annie continues to demand more money from us. In this vein, Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, and especially Sam. We’ve chosen not to respond publicly, out of respect for her privacy and our own. However, she has now taken legal action against Sam, and we feel we have no choice but to address this.”
Further addressing that this is not the first time Annie has made accusations against their family stating “Over the years, she has accused members of our family of improperly withholding our father’s 401k funds, hacking her wifi, and “shadowbanning” her from various websites including ChatGPT, Twitter, and more. The worst allegation she has made is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child (she has also claimed instances of sexual abuse from others). Her claims have evolved drastically over time. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents where Sam was over 18.”
The statement concludes by denying any of her claims: “All of these claims are utterly untrue. This situation causes immense pain to our entire family. It is especially gut-wrenching when she refuses conventional treatment and lashes out at family members who are genuinely trying to help.”
