I am a proud Samsung user through and through, so when I heard about the launch of Samsung’s two mid-rangers Galaxy A55 and A35, I was excited, to say the least.
Since the news of the launch, I have been asked this question quite a lot of times: Should they go for an old flagship like Galaxy S21 or switch to the latest S22 from the A series?
The Software Support
The Performance
The Cameras
The Battery
The Verdict
And it makes sense. The older flagships (now that they are cheaper) fall under the same price bracket as these latest mid-range phones.
But which one offers the most value for the money?
This is what we’ll be talking about in our content piece for today. So far, I have used both Galaxy S22 and A55, and needless to say I am a fan.
Here’s everything that I learned from my experience.
The Software Support
The first difference that came to my mind while I was using both phones was the software support they would be getting from Samsung. Although both of the phones are on the same Android version and utilize the Samsung One UI skin, the A55 will get updates for an additional two years.
Since S22 was released two years ago, it is done with its two major OS updates leaving room for just two more updates and one more year of security updates. On the flip side, A55 will get Android System updates up to Android 18.
Though A55 will get more updates, it’s more likely that it won’t be able to smoothly manage the latest versions. I have observed that these mid-range phones slow down after the update.
Whereas my S22 is still running smooth as a butter on the latest Android version and the One UI skin.
The Performance
The Galaxy A55 is powered by the Exynos 1480 which is not a weak chipset especially when powered by the GPU Xclipse 530 but the problem is that its competitor has more power than itself.
The Galaxy A55 handled mobile games like COD Mobile, or Asphalt 9 pretty efficiently. The game was smooth and there were almost no lags.
Then I tested the same games on S22 and I could feel the difference between a midrange and a flagship (even though it’s old). The games on the Samsung Galaxy S22 were smooth like a knife through the butter. The LPDDR5 RAM coupled with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the S22 is a perfect combination.
Also, I must mention here that to make the comparison fair I used the same Cox internet to test the gaming performance on both of these phones. This is important because sometimes the variation in ping and latency can contribute to performance delay.
All in all, the Galaxy S22 is the winner here without a doubt.
The Cameras
I am curious about the reason behind manufacturers investing in these seemingly unnecessary camera lenses. I am talking here about the A55’s third camera lens which is a 5MP macro lens. They could have used it to make the processor a bit better or to improve the existing cameras.
Anyway, the Galaxy A55 comes with a 50MP main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide, and of course that 5 MP macro lens. The pictures look fine and acceptable for the price. The videos are fine too which it can record in up to 4k @30 fps.
On the flip side, the Galaxy S22 has three lenses: a 50MP main, and a 12 MP ultra-wide, and instead of that useless macro lens, it has a usable 10MP zoom lens.
Speaking of the picture quality, it’s much better compared to other flagships like iPhone 13 or even 14. It can record videos in 8k quality which I don’t think most people will ever be using.
All in all, again the Galaxy S22 takes the win over the midrange.
The Battery
If you need a great battery timing then the A55 is the one for you. I am in love with its battery. The phone can last for two full days on a single charge if I am not gaming on it constantly.
The 5000 mAh battery is more than sufficient to power this phone. After digging in a little deeper, I found that it’s not just the numbers of the battery but the 4nm architecture of the Exynos that makes it a pretty efficient chipset and so the phone is efficient too.
On the other hand, if you don’t use your phone that much or you are fine carrying around a charger then the S22 would be fine for you. You can go for the Plus variant for some extra Lithium ions.
The bottom line is that the Galaxy A55 is the clear winner in the battery department.
The Verdict
The phone that provides more value for money is the Galaxy S22. If you need power, flagship design, and features then S22 is your safe bet. However, if you need a better battery and the latest OS running on your phone then go for the Galaxy A55.
