As their motto suggest, Raahgiri Day aims at making the streets accessible for the residents and encourage the use of cycling, walking and public transport in the city. Raahgiri Day is India’s first sustained car- free citizen initiative. It has become the biggest and coolest citizens’ initiative and definitely one you would never want to miss! Infact Raahgiri Day has been listed as one of the top 14 experiences in Gurgaon by the Lonely Planet.
Afterall, ‘Apni raahein, Apni Azaadi!
Let’s chuck out the boring part.
Here’s a list of what you can do there:
Procrastinating it since forever, because Sundays being the only days to sleep can’t be compromised on, I finally managed to drag myself to CP. Hence proved, there’s no better way to start your Sunday. Spare just one and see for yourself!
Raahgiri Day gets its inspiration from Cyclovia held weekly in Bagota, Columbia and now popular all over the world with different names viz. Open Streets, Summer Streets, etc.
The streets are cordoned off for motorized transport and made safe for citizens to enjoy the streets.
“Ab Na Chalegi Motor Koi, Chalegi Sabki Raahgiri!”
Raahgiri Day starting from Gurgoan has now expanded to cover a number of other cities like Ludhiana, Navi Mumbai and more recently Bhopal.
The initiative, launched on July 13, has been organized by Delhi Police and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) along with Embarq India. It is supported by The Times of India.
It has gravely impacted the mindsets of people and spread awareness about sustainable development and the need to protect the environment by using environment friendly transport.
Simply reading about it and actually witnessing it are poles apart. Raahgiri is indeed the NEXT BIG THING! Don’t miss out on the fun and be there.
