Imagine training for the Olympics on your dining table. No, really—like, where you eat breakfast. That’s the kind of start Lily Ann Zhang had. At 28, Zhang has reached the top 16 in women’s table tennis singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
But this Olympian’s journey hasn’t just been about mastering the ping pong paddle; it’s also been about navigating the high expectations of her traditional Chinese parents, who have long dreamed of a more “normal” career for their daughter.
From Dining Table to International Podiums
Lily Ann Zhang began playing table tennis at age seven, using the dining table in her tiny Palo Alto apartment as her practice space. Her mother, a former table tennis player who represented her province in China’s Xi’an, was undoubtedly a significant influence. By 2007, Zhang competed in international events, and her dedication to the sport was evident.
Her career trajectory took a notable turn when she represented the USA at the 2012 London Olympics. Despite her parents’ initial lack of support—hoping she would focus on her studies—Zhang’s perseverance paid off.
Over the years, she has collected numerous accolades, including helping Team USA secure its first-ever championship bronze medal in 2021, becoming an American Games medalist, and earning a Youth Olympics bronze medal.
She has had a successful career so far and recently reached the top 16 in women’s singles at the Paris Olympics by defeating Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi 4-2.
“Be A Regular Girl”
Despite all the accolades and appreciation Lily has been receiving for her amazing play, Lily’s mother Linda Liu is not happy. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, she said, “We always try to convince her to stop playing. We just want her to have a normal job. We are traditional Chinese parents. We always want her to focus on school. I always wanted her to get a job and be a regular girl.“
Team USA’s Chinese-origin coach, Jun Gao, has observed the cultural challenges faced by many athletes like Zhang. He said, “A lot of Asian parents—that’s why you see so many talented players, no matter boys or girls, after they reach college, they say bye-bye.”
His insight underlines the cultural pressures faced by Asian athletes who often juggle their sporting ambitions with their families’ traditional expectations.

Balancing Heritage and Ambition
Zhang, who grew up on the Stanford University campus where her father was a mathematics professor, shares some of her mother’s concerns about the instability of a sports career. She said she understands that “there’s so many things that can happen that can take away your stability in an instant“.
Despite these worries, Zhang has managed to strike a balance between her passion for table tennis and the academic aspirations her parents held for her.
Zhang’s parents had suggested‘…now you can focus on studies,’ after her 2012 London Olympics debut. She revealed that she had almost quit table tennis after her graduation, deliberating over her parents’ suggestions.
Despite contemplating quitting table tennis after her graduation to align with her parent’s wishes, Zhang chose to continue pursuing her passion. Her decision has not only brought her success but also made her parents her biggest cheerleaders as she advanced to the round of 16 at the Paris Olympics.
The expectations Zhang faces are not unique to Chinese families; many South Asian parents, including Indian parents, also pressure their children to pursue conventional careers.
The cultural emphasis on stability and prestige often leads parents to favour traditional 9-5 jobs over sports or creative fields. This mindset is deeply rooted in the desire for financial security and societal respect, which conventional careers are perceived to offer.
As Zhang competes in the ongoing Games, her journey serves as an inspiration to many, reflecting her resilience and dedication. Born in California to Chinese immigrant parents, Zhang has skillfully balanced her cultural heritage with her sporting ambitions.
It remains to be seen if she can bring a medal home for the United States in the current Olympics, but one thing is certain- Lily Ann Zhang’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the ability to forge one’s path despite societal expectations.
In the end, Lily Ann Zhang’s journey is a reminder that while parental expectations and cultural norms are significant, the pursuit of one’s passion and dreams holds unparalleled value. Her resilience and determination not only set her apart in the world of table tennis but also stand as a beacon of inspiration for many young athletes navigating similar paths.
