Wolverine has definitely been the most iconic X-Men character in the superhero movie world. Portrayed by none other than the charismatic Hugh Jackman, the role indeed has been immortalized for his rugged charm and bad boy antics to being a father figure and a mentor to many.
But well, it’s hard to see how the audience will take time to adjust to his absence as he becomes the clawed hero for “one last time” in his final appearance as the titular character on screen in this year’s installment of his standalone franchise’s 3rd installment, “Logan”.
Logan is inspired from the classic comic book story-line “Old Man Logan” and releases in March 2017.
Now with Hugh Jackman set to become Wolverine for the last time, we present to you the top 5 choices who could take up the role of Wolverine in the future :
(In a particular order, with 5 being the lowest and 1 being the highest)
5. Charlie Hunnam :
Charlie Hunnam has come a long way from TV to Hollywood but has indeed established himself as a great actor with some catchy performances in the recent past.
With his stint as an action hero in “Pacific Rim” and other roles of similar genre, he is one of the top choices for the role of the clawed X-Man.
Hunnam has the rugged looks and charm which is exactly what a man needs to play the iconic wolverine role and add to that his physique, he definitely fits the bill. Can he do justice to the role? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
4. Jake Gyllenhaal :
Jake Gyllenhaal has always been the go-to guy for romantic comedies. Personally, I loved his performance and could relate to his character in “Love And Other Drugs”, which is one of my favorite rom-coms.
But what did surprise me was Gyllenhaal’s performance in the boxing epic “Southpaw”, which saw him shift dramatically to an action oriented story and character.
But he did his best and played the role well, with critics highlighting his performance and appreciating a change of genres in his CV. Gyllenhaal came out of his comfort zone to build a superbly toned physique and gave a good performance, thus making him our #4 choice to play the role of Wolverine.
The boy does look good but now we also know that he can kick some serious ass. will he be “perfect” for the role? Umm, not really. But I’m sure he won’t disappoint us.
3. Michiel Huisman :
The man who gave a brilliant performance with his charm and wit as Daario Naharis in HBO’s fantasy epic show “Game Of Thrones” certainly looks the part with a strikingly similar face to the character of wolverine.
He has given some gritty performances in some of the episodes as Daario Naharis, who is the military leader of “The Second Sons” in the show and has been one of the major characters in the show.
With some good looks and a penchant for action, a toned physique and appreciable acting skills, this TV man may just be what the character needs to induce a little freshness to the role of Wolverine.
Will he stand out, if given a chance? I definitely think so.
2. Luke Evans :
He’s one of my 3 personal favorites on this list and it’s not hard to see why not.
The man has been doing some neat acting with action-oriented roles in movies like “Fast and Furious 5” and also ventured into fantasy/mythological roles by portraying the cult hero “Dracula” in the recent movie “Dracula Untold”.
Resembling a young Wolverine and having the appropriate physique, he can make a fantastic addition to the new time line of the X-Men Franchise since the “X-Men : First Class” began the tradition of a prequel series.
He has the looks, he has the style. Can he do justice to the role? I have no doubts about it.
AND NOW, FOR THE BIG REVEAL. AND THE MOST OBVIOUS YET THE MOST AMAZING CHOICE TO PLAY THE ROLE OF WOLVERINE.
The One, The Only.
1. Tom Hardy :
As soon as you look at Tom Hardy’s menacingly charming face and his supernaturally amazing muscles and body, you just know that this guy can play a superhero.
Now, looking at him, I think he’d be fit to play 3 Marvel characters : Cable, The Punisher but most importantly, Wolverine.
Hugh Jackman has himself referred to Hardy as his favorite choice to play the character and fan reaction has been very positive, as well.
With Tom hardy already proving his acting skills across various genres and working with some of the finest directors such as Christopher Nolan in some of the biggest action movie franchises (playing the villainous role of Batman’s enemy Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” of the The Dark Knight trilogy and the lead protagonist in “Mad Max : Fury Road”, which served as the reboot of the Mad Max franchise), Tom Hardy is no stranger to big roles in big movies.
With the style, the accent, the looks, the physique and the charismatic acting skills to match it all up, Tom Hardy will be a stellar addition to the X-Men franchise as Wolverine.
Well that our list, folks!
Here’s hoping the mighty character of Wolverine is kept alive on screen by Fox Movies for many more years to come.
