Multiple Theories Question The Timing Of VP Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation

-

The resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday night came as a shock to the entire country. One of the reasons for the extreme reaction was that this was much before his term completion date, which was 2027; the other was due to how unexpected the decision came about, something that no one saw coming.

On Monday night, Dhankhar, claiming health concerns, gave his resignation from his post. However, many are reluctant to believe that to be the real reason, and soon theories began to emerge about what the real reason could be.

Why Did VP Jagdeep Dhankhar Resign?

On the night of July 21, 2025, Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was serving as the current Vice President of India, tendered his resignation with immediate effect to President Droupadi Murmu.

Now, reports claim that Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022, did this because he claimed to have health issues.

A letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu was posted on the X/Twitter page of the Vice President that stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution. I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency, the Honourable President of India for her unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure.”

The letter further wrote, “I express my deep gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office. The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished at and embedded in my memory. I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy.”

According to reports, though, something about this wasn’t sitting right with people, especially the Opposition, who questioned why this was happening.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a post on X/Twitter wrote, “The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable. I was with him alongside a number of other MPs till around 5 PM today and had spoken to him over the phone at 7:30 PM. No doubt, Mr. Dhankhar has to give topmost priority to his health. But clearly, there is far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye. This is not the time for speculation, though.”

JMM MP Mahua Maji was quoted by news agency ANI saying, “This is very shocking news, especially for the Opposition parties… Today in the House, we didn’t feel that he was going to resign today itself… There are speculations that there may be another reason behind it… We all want him to reconsider this decision.”

Congress MP Mallu Ravi also shared similar sentiments, saying, “India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar conducted the two-day Rajya Sabha session properly without showing any signs of physical discomfort… His resignation letter states that his health is not suitable, but we feel this is more about his political ill-health than physical ill-health. Especially before the Bihar elections, perhaps the BJP wanted to replace him with someone who could help them.”

Congress leader Udit Raj further raised questions about the timing, saying, “There are several important issues like the Operation Sindoor matter and the voter list in Bihar… Jagdeep Dhankhar’s presence is essential for all these matters. I also find it a bit strange. Was this done to avoid these issues?”

The silence of several BJP ministers right after news of the resignation broke out also had people raising questions. There were no messages from other ministers, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged it in a tweet after 15 hours of the letter being posted.

Some reports have also talked about the timing, since the resignation came right after the first day of the Parliament monsoon session, which was plenty eventful in its own right. Rumours also began circulating because the Vice President’s Secretariat had on Monday posted a press release about a scheduled one-day visit of the VP to Jaipur later in the week.

An India Today report believes that one theory for this could be that Dhankhar’s resignation is so that Nitish Kumar can take up the position, before the Bihar elections take place.

BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur’s statement to reporters about how “It will be very good for Bihar is Nitish Kumar is made the Vice President” only added to the rumour mills.

A CNN-News18 report also puts forth the theory that it was Dhankhar’s decision on Justice Yashwant Varma that really did him in. On Monday, a notice signed by 68 opposition MPs was sent to Dhankhar demanding the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma after a large stash of cash was recovered from his home earlier in the year.

Dhankhar then admitted the letter and further instructed the Secretary-General to proceed with the matter. Apparently, this was not taken lightly by the Centre, which didn’t appreciate that the former VP announced it “without consulting the Treasury Benches.”

A BJP leader speaking with The Indian Express also said, “While the government was trying to build a consensus to move the motion (in the Lok Sabha), the Rajya Sabha Chairman accepted a notice which only had signatures of the Opposition MPs and made a statement. It was a big embarrassment for the government.”
