Politicians say a lot of things and get by but of them the many sexist things Indian politicians say feature very prominently.
It’s 2017, and Shawna Pandey has been confirmed to be the 3rd Indian origin women to go the space. But we are sure that this is never going to happen in India.
You see, we have such AAUUHHH-mazing politicians who will never disappoint when it comes to putting women down.
In recent years many renowned men of public interest have shown how misogyny is deep seated within the Indian men, how misogyny has been hindering women from progressing in our country.
The top politicians especially can’t help but speak of women like objects and then make it sound like it’s totally okay!
Let us go through some of the most controversial comments made by Indian politicians. How ignorant are they really, you be the judge.
1. Mulayam Singh Yadav
In 2012, while objecting to the Women’s Reservation Bill, Mulayam claimed it will be of no use to women from rural areas.
This is what he had to say at a gathering in Barabanki:
Okay, so this man has served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, and humare desh ke politicians ke comments me logic ki thodi kum hoti hai… Bas itna kahoongi.
2. Sanjay Nirupam
On Dec 21, 2012 Sanjay Nirupam who is a congress MP, said this against Smriti Irani, former TV actress and presently a BJP leader (now the textile minister) during a TV debate on a national news channel:
Because if you’re an actress, the only job you are allowed to do is to act and entertain people and not have any opinion about anything at all.
3. Tapas Pal
In 2014, a video of Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal went viral, where he could be seen openly threatening to rape women members of the opposition.
“I am from Chandannagar. Leaders are created by workers. I am also a goonda. I will shoot you guys if a Trinamool Congress worker is ever attacked. If you have the guts, then stop me… If you insult the mothers and daughters of Trinamool workers, I won’t spare you…
With great powers come great responsibilities… Like making rape threats? And FYI, this guy used to be a celebrated actor in Bengal!
4. Mulayam Singh Yadav. AGAIN.
If you have been looking for the most sexist things Indian politicians have said, please don’t look further.
Mulayam Singh Yadav is a repeat offender when it comes to sexist remarks. In 2014, the former Samajwadi Party chief opposed capital punishment for rape, saying:
This man has the uncanny ability to bring down the IQ of akkha UP to ZERO.
5. Narendra Modi
In a rally in Himachal Pradesh he put a price tag on Sunanda Pushkar, now the wife of Shashi Tharoor (was his girlfriend at that time), of rupees 50 crore:
Wah! Kya do rupay wali baat kari hai!
There is no scarcity of such sexist things Indian politicians say that can simply keep piling up on each other. The core of this is a deep-seated patriarchal bias that takes Indian women for granted and refuses to acknowledge them as equals.
Forget about wage equality, India is still far away from achieving minimal respect for women.
Sexist things Indian politicians say is a good watermark for indicating the brand of sexism that is overall rampant in India.
If the leader of the nation think rape is a joke and every woman comes with a price tag, we sure hell know no woman in India can be safe even in the safest spaces.
