Is Canada PM Justin Trudeau Biased Towards China? Was Intel On India Leaked By Their Party?

The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada has reached an all-time low, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations linking Indian officials to the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.

The tension escalated when Trudeau’s senior officials, including National Security Adviser Nathalie Drouin and Deputy Minister David Morrison, shared sensitive intelligence with The Washington Post, accusing India of orchestrating violent operations in Canada.

Interestingly, this happened just days before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were set to announce evidence linking Indian agents to these acts.

While Trudeau attempts to paint India as a foreign aggressor meddling in Canadian affairs, his stance towards Chinese interference has been far more lenient. His actions reveal a striking double standard, exposing not only his hypocrisy but also the political motives driving his decisions.

The Allegations Against India

In September 2023, Justin Trudeau made headlines by accusing India of involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist. Nijjar, designated as a terrorist by India, was killed in Surrey, British Columbia.

The murder, which Trudeau linked to Indian government agents, led to a diplomatic fallout, with both countries expelling each other’s diplomats. But even as the dust from this incident settled, another Sikh separatist, Sukhdool Singh Gill, was found dead in Winnipeg just days later.

While The Washington Post published a report citing Canadian officials who accused India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating violent operations, no concrete evidence has been presented to the public.

The Canadian government has thus far relied on “intelligence,” without hard proof, to substantiate its claims. The timing of these allegations, with Trudeau needing political support from the National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Jagmeet Singh, a known Khalistani sympathizer, adds a layer of political opportunism.

Trudeau’s Double Standard On Intelligence

What makes Trudeau’s accusations against India even more perplexing is his starkly different approach to Chinese interference in Canada.

In October 2024, Trudeau appeared before the Foreign Interference Commission and downplayed instances of Chinese diplomats targeting Canadian MPs. He dismissed it as “what diplomats do.”

This mild reaction sharply contrasts with his aggressive stance on India, where he has gone as far as accusing Indian diplomats of feeding intelligence to criminal gangs.

Dan Stanton, a former official with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), aptly pointed out the hypocrisy, stating that information regarding India’s alleged activities should have remained classified. “Such intelligence would typically not be shared without proper authorization,” he said.

Trudeau’s hypocrisy becomes evident when we examine his actions surrounding foreign interference. When sensitive intelligence about India was shared with The Washington Post, there was no outcry from Trudeau about the media meddling in intelligence matters.

Yet, when Canadian media reported on Chinese interference in the 2019 and 2021 elections, he labelled the leaks as the work of “criminals”.

Trudeau’s selective outrage raises serious questions about his intentions and whether he is truly concerned about foreign interference or simply using it as a political tool.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre went so far as to accuse Trudeau of “lying to distract from a Liberal caucus revolt” and suggested he knowingly allowed Chinese interference in two elections that helped him win.

Trudeau’s Vote-Bank Politics

A significant factor behind Trudeau’s hostility towards India lies in his domestic political agenda. Trudeau’s administration relies on the support of the NDP, led by Jagmeet Singh, a staunch Khalistani advocate.

With Canada’s Sikh population constituting roughly 2% of the country’s total population but wielding considerable political influence, Trudeau has been pandering to the Khalistani vote bank. This is evident not only in his accusations against India but also in his reluctance to act against Khalistani extremists operating within Canada.

As Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar put it succinctly, “If anybody has a complaint… we have a complaint about Canada. You know—the space that they are giving to Khalistanis and to violent extremes.”

Khalistani elements in Canada have openly glorified terrorists, threatened Indian diplomats, and desecrated Hindu temples. Despite India raising concerns about these activities for years, Trudeau has turned a blind eye, allowing these extremists to flourish.

His failure to crack down on such elements has emboldened them, and his government has become a haven for those advocating for a violent separatist movement. For Trudeau, the Khalistanis represent a crucial voting bloc, one he cannot afford to alienate if he wishes to maintain his grip on power.

India Standing Firm Against Baseless Accusations

India’s response to Trudeau’s allegations has been one of firm rejection. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar dismissed Trudeau’s claims as “absurd and motivated,” asserting that Canada has provided no substantial evidence to back its accusations.

India has long maintained that it has no involvement in the killings of Nijjar or Gill and that these accusations are merely a smokescreen for Trudeau’s domestic political troubles.

New Delhi has also pointed out the hypocrisy in Canada’s handling of its internal threats. While Canadian officials accuse Indian diplomats of engaging with criminal gangs, it is Canada that has granted visas and citizenship to known fugitives and criminals from India.

Over 26 extradition requests from India remain unresolved, and Canada’s unwillingness to act against these elements has only strained relations further.

A Strained Diplomatic Future

The fallout from Trudeau’s actions has had far-reaching consequences. Diplomatic relations between India and Canada are at their lowest point in decades. Both countries have recalled diplomats, and visa operations have been suspended. For Canada, this could have serious economic and educational repercussions, given the significant trade and people-to-people ties between the two nations.

For India, the accusations represent not just a political dispute but an attempt to malign its reputation on the global stage. Trudeau’s willingness to publicly accuse India without substantial evidence raises questions about his commitment to maintaining healthy diplomatic relations. His actions suggest that he is more concerned with appeasing domestic political interests than fostering international partnerships.

Justin Trudeau’s handling of the India-Canada dispute is a textbook case of political opportunism. His selective outrage towards foreign interference, willingness to accuse India without evidence, and pandering to Khalistani elements within Canada all point to a leader in crisis.

With his approval ratings at an all-time low and his political future uncertain, Trudeau has chosen to play the India card in an attempt to distract from his failures at home.

In doing so, he has not only jeopardized Canada’s relationship with a key international partner but has also exposed himself as a hypocrite who is willing to sacrifice national interests for political survival.

The Trudeau administration’s actions, if left unchecked, could lead to long-lasting damage to Canada’s global standing, and the trust that once existed between the two democracies may take years to rebuild.
