Instead Of Gratitude, Indians Seen ‘Beating’ Armed Forces Jawans For Petty Reasons

-

The videos of an Indian army Jawan being assaulted at a toll plaza in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have spread like wildfire. Not just because of the violence, but the brutality of it. It has also had people bring up other recent incidents about Indian Jawans being attacked and beaten up.

The question in the midst of all this, though, is, why has there been an increase in such events? What is making people get into such violent conflicts with Indian soldiers, when the profession itself has always been revered and people in it treated with respect?

What Happened In Meerut?

On Sunday night, August 17, 2025, an Army jawan, Kapil Kavad, was assaulted by toll workers at Bhuni Toll Plaza in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Quickly, videos from the incident spread, going viral, due to the violence shown against the soldier, with men kicking and punching him, even going so far as to tie him to a pole and hitting him with bricks and sticks.

The Army soldier, a resident of Gotka village, as per an India Today report, was travelling to Delhi airport after completing his leave and to resume duty. Kapil is a soldier stationed in Jammu and Kashmir. It was while they were in line at the Bhuni Toll Plaza on the Meerut–Karnal highway that the incident took place.

An argument erupted after Kapil tried to show his ID and requested the toll workers to allow a quick pass through the toll, since he had a 5 am flight to catch, as per a report by The New Indian Express.

As per NDTV, Superintendent of Police Rakesh Kumar Mishra explained the situation, saying, “There was a long queue at the Bhuni toll booth. He was in a hurry and he spoke to the toll booth staff. An argument began, and the toll booth staff assaulted him. Following a complaint from his family, a case was registered at Sarurpur police station.”

The Meerut Police on its X/Twitter page also posted, “Under the Sarurpur police station area, at the Bhuni Toll Plaza, an incident of assault on an Indian Army soldier by toll workers occurred. The police took swift action and arrested 04 accused individuals. A statement regarding this matter was given by the Superintendent of Police (Rural).”

The accused were charged with several sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Kanwariyas Assaulted CRPF Jawan In UP

In July of this year, reports came out of Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva on pilgrimage) assaulting a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan at the Mirzapur railway station in Uttar Pradesh. The reason for this was due to an argument over purchasing tickets for the same train.

According to reports, the CRPF jawan was on leave and waiting to board the Brahmaputra Express train, with the kanwariyas also wanting to buy a ticket to the same train. They wanted to go to Baidyanath Dham in Jharkhand.

A dispute broke out after there was an argument regarding the purchase of train tickets and eventually escalated to a physical fight with the Kanwariyas kicking, punching, and pushing the soldier.

Soon after, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) registered a case and arrested seven Kanwariyas involved in the assault. An official, as per media reports, stated, “Seven Kanwariyas have been arrested in the case of beating up a CRPF jawan.”

However, apparently, four of them were minors, and all were reportedly released on bail the same day.

The video of the assault went viral, sparking debate about the behaviour of some pilgrims during the Kanwar Yatra and outrage and condemnation against the treatment of soldiers.

It’s both ironic and heartbreaking that those who sacrifice for the nation are sometimes beaten for parking or mere impatience. These individuals don’t ask for pomp or ceremony—just the bare minimum of decency.
