How wealthy are India’s Chief Ministers? A new analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) reveals a striking disparity in the personal fortunes of the country’s CMs.
Based on self-sworn affidavits filed before their most recent elections, the report places Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu as the leader of the pack in terms of highest assets, making him the richest CM in India. He is followed by Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh and Siddaramaiah of Karnataka.
At the other end of the wealth spectrum lies Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal’s Chief Minister, making her the poorest among her peers. She is followed by Omar Abdullah, CM of Jammu and Kashmir, and Pinarayi Vijayan, CM of Kerala.

On average, a sitting CM in India owns assets worth ₹54.42 crore, while the combined wealth of all 30 state leaders adds up to a staggering ₹1,632 crore.
This sharp contrast offers a telling glimpse into the unequal financial realities of India’s political class, where the richest hold assets several thousand times greater than the poorest.
The ADR-NEW analysis underlines not just the wealth gap between India’s political leaders but also the unique contrasts in the states they govern.
From Chandrababu Naidu’s towering ₹931 crore fortune to Mamata Banerjee’s modest ₹15.38 lakh declaration, the spread of assets highlights the vast financial diversity within India’s highest political offices.
While such figures raise important questions about the relationship between money and politics, they also remind us that personal wealth does not always determine political influence or public appeal. As voters and citizens, these numbers encourage us to reflect on the economic realities of our leaders and how they align, or contrast, with the lives of the people they represent.
