In Pics: Fan Casting For The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Indian Version

-

The Summer I Turned Pretty, a popular American drama, is a perfect example of how Gen Z viewers are always on the lookout for relatable stories and reflect the turmoil of growing up. In recent years, the Indian audience seems to actively consume Western content and connect to the themes they spiral around.

Ranging from binge-worthy dramas to popular music, global content that explores relationships, identity and struggles, especially among Gen Z, has struck a chord with them.

The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on Jenny Han’s bestselling trilogy, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Han also created Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, an adaptation of her book trilogy of the same name.

Now, there are even rumours circulating about how it could get an Indian adaptation. From Reddit threads to Instagram Reels, thousands of edits and discussions around the perfect cast and storyline of the series have already begun.

What Is The Summer I Turned Pretty?

The series follows the lives of the three children, Belly Conklin, Conrad Fisher, and Jeremiah Fisher, of two best friends, Laurel Conklin and Susannah Beck Fisher. They, alongside Steven (Belly’s elder brother) and Taylor (Belly’s best friend), spend every summer at Cousin’s Beach, the fictional setting of the show.

The first two seasons star Belly, a quiet and awkward kid who turns pretty on her 16th birthday, giving the drama its title. Problems unfold when Belly moves on from her long-term unreciprocated crush on Conrad Fisher, eventually getting involved with his younger brother Jeremiah, only to find out about Conrad’s feelings for her.

Now in its third and final season, the show advances four years. Belly and Jeremiah are engaged, and Conrad is still around, with his unresolved feelings for Belly. What began as a teen rom-com has now unfolded as a messy love triangle that has left fans glued to their screens.

The third season’s initial two episodes have amassed 25 million views, as reported by Vogue India. The show’s soundtrack extensively features music by Taylor Swift and other popular artists, who have a substantial fanbase in India.

How Has TSITP Captured the Indian Audience

Although the show might be American, it seems to have gained a considerable Indian audience as well.

A glance at the recent posts shows how deep the obsession runs. A user on X (Twitter) posted, “the way summer i turned pretty is very pakistani / indian drama coded like i’ve seen maybe a million shows like this since i was 5.”

Another joked, “The Summer I Turned Pretty wouldn’t have existed in India because they’d have been rakhi brothers by now”, to which another user replied, “100% and Belly would be ded beat if they had an elder sister”, poking fun at how India treats “sibling-like” bonds.

Not only this, but actors also have a take on the show. Actors Khushi Kapoor and Vedang Raina featured in a promotional reel for Prime India, showing their take on the show. Khushi was Team Conrad, while Vedang sided with Team Jeremiah. Fans also joined the debate in the comment section.

The craze seems to have reached a level that there are even rumours of the show getting an Indian version. While there has been no official report or confirmation of any kind related to this, it hasn’t stopped the fans from getting on board and starting their own fancasting for which Bollywood actor would be best suitable for which character.

Here’s our pick:

Belly (Isabel) Conklin: Ananya Pandey

Ever imagined Ananya Pandey playing Belly? The wide-eyed first-love confusion, that mix of innocence and drama, and the “I don’t know whom to choose but I like both of them” energy? Ananya is a GOOD CHOICE.

Conrad Fisher: Aditya Roy Kapoor

Tall, handsome, mysterious. Everything we’d picture Conrad Fisher to be. If Aditya Roy Kapoor were cast as Conrad Fisher, the internet would break. He’s been breaking hearts since Aashiqui 2, and as Conrad Fisher? He’d do it all over again.

Jeremiah Fisher: Rohit Saraf

Rohit Saraf is the internet boyfriend already. Now imagine, as Jeremiah Fisher, he’d be absolutely irresistible. Rohit’s sunshine energy makes him the perfect pick.

Steven Conklin: Abhay Verma

Abhay Verma would kill it as Steven. The messy hair with the smart-cute guy combo? He is it.

Taylor (Belly’s Best Friend): Tara Sutaria

Stylish. Sassy. Glam. Tara Sutaria has it all.

Laurel (Belly’s Mom): Konkona Sen Sharma

The perfect blend of elegance, maturity, and “I know what’s best for you” energy. Konkona would bring Laurel’s grounded yet loving presence to life effortlessly.

Susannah (Conrad and Jeremiah’s Mom): Tabu

Elegant, graceful, and full of warmth, who better than Tabu to play Susannah? She’d bring the exact mix of strength and vulnerability the role deserves.

Let’s be real, Bollywood’s The Summer I Turned Pretty would just break the internet.
