The original Heeramandi was set up as a grain market in Lahore, in 1843, by the prime minister of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Courtesans occupied a corner in that area.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut show on Netflix, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, has received mixed reviews. While it is gaining global appreciation, eagle-eyed netizens have been pointing out some subtle blunders in the 8-episodic series.

The web series is gaining a lot of popularity, with Instagram being full of reels of the then-aesthetics and influencers’ reviews of the characters, acting skills, backdrop and others. However, content on many historical inaccuracies in this big-budget Netflix series, from the language spoken by the characters to the opulence of their attire and the place where they lived, have also flooded social media.

It all started with a thread on Twitter by a Pakistani resident and a young Lahore-based doctor, Hamd Nawaz.

“Just watched Heeramandi. Found everything but heermandi in it. I mean, either you don’t set your story in 1940’s Lahore, or if you do- you don’t set it in Agra’s landscape, Delhi’s Urdu, Lakhnavi dresses and 1840’s vibe. My not-so-sorry Lahori self can’t really let it go,” she said.

Here we showcase 5 things that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ got wrong:
