Abbreviated as HIL, this is India’s first Professional Hockey Competition sanctioned by Hockey India and sponsored by Hero Motocorp The tournament has five franchisee based teams having International and Indian players. Earlier it had six but Bangalore went unsold. Held from 14th Jan to 10th Feb, matches will be played on a home and away basis.
Indian hockey’s chief sponsor Sahara India Pariwar bought the first franchise based in Lucknow.
Jaypee Group picked up the Punjab franchise.
Ranchi franchise was selected by Patel-Uniexcel Group.
Ponty Chadha’s Business house Wave Group bought Delhi franchise.
Mumbai franchise was bought by Dabur India Ltd.
Each franchise has 24 players-14 Indian & 10 International.

Indian player bought by Delhi Wave Riders. Tickets range from Rs.50 to Rs. 1000. Some marquee players in the league are Sardar Singh, S.V.Sunil, Sandeep Singh, Australian Jamie Dwyer, German Moritz Suertse and Dutch Teun de Nooijer. But reports also claim that Nooijer might be the haighest apid player in this league.
The Highest Indian paid player in this league is Sardar Sing at $78,000 and the International player is German Moritz Suertse at $75,500. The player of the tournament will get 25 Lacs and The Most Upcoming Player will get 20 Lacs. Cool, isn’t it? Well, no comparison to IPL but it is a good start for Young Talent in the country and hockey in India. However Shiv Sena opposing the participation of Pakistani players, is already a controversy surrounding HIL.
