An Indian moving to Canada is not just a reality, but so much more than that in our society.
From being a running joke about how Canada has just become a mini India at this point, considering the amount of Indian migrants there or how according to a National Foundation for American Policy (NAFP) analysis “Between 2013 and 2023, Indians immigrating to Canada rose from 32,828 to 139,715, an increase of 326%” the Canada and India relations have existed since decades now.
Even now, during the ongoing crisis between the Indian and Canadian governments, Canada remains a preferred destination for Indians especially those trying to seek out opportunities. However, a recent post by an Indian woman about Indian migrants in Canada has led to a lot of intense reactions.
What Is The Controversial Post?
On 20th July 2024, a social media user Megha posted on her X/Twitter profile commenting about Indian immigrants in Canada and how they are damaging the reputation of Indian. She wrote “My parents and entire family HATE the Indians migrants filling up Canada. Probably more than the migrants themselves because of how thoroughly they’ve damaged our reputation.
Indian immigrants who were educated came largely from nice families, from the city, with manners, English skills and etiquette.
These new migrants, defiling the beaches and groping women, come from illiterate, low-class backgrounds and have no sense of civic duty nor are they capable of learning. Class systems are real. This is why the strongest right-wing force in Canada comes from 80s and 90s Indian immigrants, ironically.”
This has resulted in many intense reactions and debates being sparked across social media. While a lot of people expressed anger against the woman’s comments, some showed agreement, or at least raised questions on immigrant communities, integration, identity, patterns in migration, host society, and more.

A lot of people disagreed with the original poster, calling her ‘narrow-minded’, ‘racist’, and more against her people.
One user replied “Indians are the most racist towards each other,” with another stating “Self-hatred will work against your family eventually,” and another wrote “Megha has a true Indo European spirit. you are likely related to a royal dynasty.”
One person questioned the immigration system itself writing “What changed in the immigration system that they started allowing uneducated migrants? I always thought US and Canadian immigration systems are designed to attract only the highly skilled, educated Indians.”
User @Bratt_world also showed agreement writing “Yup this is so true. It’s only been noticeable for about 5 years. Because they’re not “immigrants” they’re temps Immigration is a thorough process, and those who come through that process fit right in, but the new young punks coming? They’re not integrating well.”
Another called out Trudeau’s policy saying “Canadians don’t understand class distinctions. They literally put everyone in the same category. The irresponsible Trudeau immigration policy is causing massive problems, destroying the social fabric, and turning Canadians against immigrants in general. This is a very bad thing.”
One user Vineeth Naik also commented “Megha, you guys in Canada can create a system of hierarchy to divide the population. Like: White Canadians > 80s and 90s Indian Canadians > Other races > New Indians This way you can discriminate against these new Indians and make sure the educated Indians do not marry or mingle with them. You can call this system a “Caste System” or something.”
Some took offence to the comments in the post writing “Do you think education is exclusive to families from the city?” and how “Looks like your parents and the entire family are hardcore casteist — that’s all.”
When user Daniel Anthony commented on her original post “Aren’t there many subethnic groups under the umbrella term ‘Indian’? It was my understanding that there are rivalries between groups in India and 22 official languages since they are very different from each other” she replied “Ethnicity doesn’t predict the bad behaviour as much as education and upbringing. That’s why the points system was so brilliant.”
User @RBhavinVaid replied, “’Low class backgrounds’, tell me you’re quoting your parents without telling me you’re quoting your parents”.
Megha did try to clarify that her comments are “not a caste thing, it’s an education, etiquette and basic values/upbringing thing,” however, it doesn’t seem to have worked in her favour.
