It was a sad start to Friday morning with news of National Award-winning actor Surekha Sikri having passed away due to a cardiac arrest.
The 75-year-old actress was renowned in the Indian entertainment industry, however on Friday 16th July 2021, she passed away. Ms. Sikri had been battling with ill health for a long time and had already suffered through two brain strokes in 2018 and 2020.
Her management was quoted saying that “Three-time national award winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke. She was surrounded by family and her caregivers. The family asks for privacy at this time. Om Sai Ram.”
The veteran actor first made her debut into the industry with the political drama film Kissa Kursi Ka in 1978 and her career covered all areas of the entertainment sector like theatre, television and films. She had been awarded the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress three times for Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995) and Badhaai Ho (2018).
She was born in Uttar Pradesh and the daughter of an Air Force officer and through an interesting turn of the fates got admitted into the National School of Drama (NSD) from where she graduated in 1971.
Two of her most known roles have been that of strict matriarch Kalyani Devi for Colors TV’s show ‘Balika Vadhu’ and Durga Devi an old school seeming mother-in-law and grandmother in the 2018 film Badhai Ho.
It was Durga Devi’s character that touched a lot of millennials and instantly made her a favourite among the new generation. They applauded her character for being progressive in thinking and defending her daughter-in-law for getting pregnant at a socially unacceptable age.
While the actor might not be with us anymore, some of her quotes really continue to inspire us and really show us who she was as a person.
