After the Hamas group carried out the attack on the region of Israel on October 7th, the situation has only worsened with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even claiming that Israel was now ‘at war’.

In the midst of all this, both the Indian political parties have also given out statements showing support for either side. While the BJP has shown to stand with Israel in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Congress and other Left parties have condemned the violence from both sides and asked to figure out a solution for the issues faced by the Palestinians.

What Did Congress Say?

On the 9th October 2023, Congress communication head Jairam Ramesh in a statement posted on social media platform X wrote that “The Indian National Congress condemns the brutal attacks on the people of Israel.

The Indian National Congress has always believed that the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a life of self-respect, equality and dignity must be fulfilled only through a process of dialogue and negotiations while ensuring the legitimate national security interests of the Israeli people.

Violence of any type never provides a solution and must stop.”

The Congress Working Committee also released a statement saying “The CWC calls for an immediate cease-fire and for negotiations to begin on all outstanding issues including the imperative issues that have given rise to the present conflict.”

The CWC passed the resolution showing their support of Palestine in a four-hour meeting held on October 7th, 2023.

Incidentally, around the same time a speech by India’s former Prime Minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee went viral where he was seen supporting the Palestine region.

The speech was made almost 46 years ago in 1977 and Vajpayee is head speaking in Hindi that “Akramankari, akraman ke phalon ka upbhog karein ye apne sambandh mein humein sweekar nahin hain. To jo niyam hum par lagu hain, wo auro par bhi lagu hoga. Arbo ki zameen khali honi chahiye. Jo philistini, unke uchit adhikaro ki prasthapna hona chahiye. Israel ke astitva ko soviet Russia, America ne bhi sweekar kiya hain, hum bhi sweekar kar chuke hain.”

As per Livemint’s report, he said “It is being said that Janata Party has formed the government. It will not support the Arabs, it will support Israel. Respected Morarji Bhai has clarified the situation.

To remove the misunderstanding, I would like to say that I want that we will look at each question on the basis of merits and demerits. But regarding the Middle East, the situation is clear that the Arab land on which Israel is occupying will have to be vacated.”

He also added “We do not accept that the aggressor should enjoy the fruits of the invasion. So, the rules that apply to us will also apply to others. The land of Arabs should be vacated.”

Along with how “A solution to the Middle East will have to be found which will eliminate aggression and become the basis of permanent peace.”

The BJP’s current official stance, however, seems to be with Israel with PM Modi’s writing on X, “Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour.”

External affairs minister S Jaishankar also reposted it on his social media.
