The separation and divorce of Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma has been going on for some time now.
On Thursday, March, 20, the Mumbai family court granted the couple a divorce. The process was expedited due to Chahal’s future commitments with the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament as part of the Punjab Kings team.
It was also for this reason that the Bombay High Court waived the six-month cooling period that is mandatory for every couple applying for a divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act. In the midst of this, news broke out about the amount that Dhanashree would be getting as alimony from her now ex-husband Yuzvendra Chahal.
According to reports, Chahal will pay Dhanashree a total of Rs. 4.75 crore in two installments. He has already paid Rs. 2 crores, 37 lakhs, and 55 thousand, and the rest will be paid as permanent alimony after the court finalises the divorce, according to Bar and Bench. But social media has had a lot to say about this.
Cryptic Shirt Worn By Chahal
A T-shirt worn by Yuzvendra Chahal during the divorce hearing caught the attention of many. In a video that ended up going viral, Chahal coming out of the court was seen wearing a black t-shirt that read “Be your own sugar daddy”.

Some netizens took this to be a kind of cryptic comment about the alimony amount.
Backlash On Independent, Earning Girl Asking For Alimony
It seems though that the amount Dhanashree got as alimony has pissed off a lot of people online. Soon after news broke out about the alimony amount, several netizens criticised Dhanashree for taking alimony resulting in a lot of backlash against her.
User @peepoye_ on X/Twitter wrote “So, Dhanashree just scored ₹4.75 crores in alimony. Court-approved, cha-ching! She’s a dance influencer, has millions of followers, brand deals galore —an independent woman, right? So why’s she pocketing his cash? Where are the feminists screaming equality now? Thought you’d call this empowerment, huh? She’s twirling her way to the bank while Yuzi foots the bill! Self-made? Sure, if ‘self-made’ includes a fat divorce payout. Hypocrisy’s the real winner here.”
User @AKitOfTweets commented “But 4.25Crs alimony is for what? They do not even have any child, so this huge amount is for which maintenance? In fact, this girl used Chahal links & fame to gain the hype on social media, used Indian Team Cricketers for her reels and social media engagement. She need to payback the money she earned through Chahal here.”
While user @san_x_m wrote “While passing the alimony judgment, what were M’lords thinking? The biggest asset Yuzi gave Dhanashree was connections and fame, which she will milk her whole life. How can you even justify ₹4.75 crore for a working woman, without a child from the marriage?”
Another user wrote “Alimony was meant for women who sacrificed careers for marriage. But when an educated, financially independent woman takes ₹4.25 Cr for an 18-month marriage, what exactly is being compensated here? If a man did this, he’d be called a scammer. Why the double standards? I’d love to hear your opinion on my podcast too. Kinda similar lines.”

Delhi HC Comment
The Delhi High Court while supervising another separate case also commented on the reason for the maintenance law and how it should not be misused. On March 20, Justice Chandra Dhari Singh was hearing a plea by a woman challenging the denial of interim maintenance from her estranged husband verdict given by a trial court.
Justice Chandra Dhari Singh dismissing the plea said “Section 125 (order for maintenance of wives, children and parents) of the CrPC carries the legislative intent to maintain equality among the spouses, provide protection to the wives, children and parents, and not promote idleness.”
Justice Singh said “This court is of the considered view that a well-educated wife, with experience in a suitable gainful job, ought not to remain idle solely to gain maintenance from her husband. Therefore, interim maintenance is being discouraged in the present case as this court can see potential in the petitioner to earn and make good of her education.”
Dhanashree’s New Music Video
Dhanashree, however, has not been entirely silent during this whole ordeal. Soon after photos of Yuzvendra Chahal attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai with RJ Mahvash went viral, she posted an image on her Instagram Stories that read “Blaming women is always in fashion”.
Now, on the day her divorce was finalised she released a new music video called Dekha Ji Dekha Maine that shows Verma as a woman whose husband has betrayed her.
The music video also reportedly tackles themes like domestic violence and infidelity. One particular line that goes “Dekha ji dekha maine, apno ka rona dekha. Gairon ke bistar pe, apno ka sona dekha” (I saw my own people crying. I saw my own sharing a bed with others) has caught the attention of netizens.
The timing of the music video release and the contents within have sparked discussions on whether this is targeted against her former husband.
