Fact Check: Is US President Donald Trump Banned From Nobel Peace Awards?

-

Donald Trump, president of the United States, has been vying for the Nobel Peace Prize for a good minute there.

In practically every public appearance, he has been singing his own praises of how he has practically introduced peace in the world. His comments about being the cause behind the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Ukraine and Russia, and various other instances are claimed to be attempts at strengthening his nomination for the award.

However, recently, a photo of what seems to be an Associated Press (AP) press release claiming that Trump has been permanently banned from the award began to make the rounds. The real question is, is this true?

What Is The Claim?

A few days ago, several social media posts started to circulate a photo of what is supposed to be a press release Associated Press (AP) with the title “NPC BARRS TRUMP ACCOLADE.”

The image instantly went viral since it claims that the current US President, Donald Trump, has been “permanently disqualified from future awards after his controversial comments in his UN speech on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, as well as his decision to rename the U.S. Department of Defense as the “Department of War”.

Several people also posted about it on various social media platforms, believing it to be true.

Is It True?

This claim, however, seems to be false, as per multiple fact checks. According to reports, the Nobel Peace Prize website has not made any official statement denying or confirming the image; however, the nomination policies also state that the committee does not ever confirm nominees for the award.

The outline states, “The Nobel Committee does not confirm the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves. There are cases where names of candidates appear in the media, either as a result of sheer speculation or because individuals themselves report to have nominated specific candidates. The list of nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize is released 50 years after the prize is awarded, in accordance with the statues of the Nobel Foundation.”

The nominee lists are also only revealed 50 years after the award is given. The FAQ section on the site also states that nominations are open to any person in the world; however, this should not be taken as an endorsement or honour by the Nobel institution.

A fact check done by The Quint also confirmed that there has been no such press release published by AP or posted on their social media.

It also checked the website mentioned in the email address for the contact person, Hanz Zeemer, mentioned in the viral image, but was led to an open page, meaning either the website doesn’t exist, was taken down, or deleted.

According to another fact check done by MEAWW (MEA WorldWide), a US publication, also pointed out some red flags in the image, particularly that official AP alerts don’t have “editorialised language” or include contact details, especially to “shady domains.”

This doesn’t mean that Trump’s chances of actually getting a Nobel Peace Prize are any closer, though. At least, not according to some experts who believe that his lobbying for the award, support of Israel in the Gaza war, and other reasons don’t endear him to the selection committee.

Asle Sveen, a Norwegian historian who specialises in the Nobel Peace Prize, said that “He (Trump) has no chance to get the Peace Prize at all,” especially given his “support for Israel in the war in Gaza and his attempts at rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” as per a Reuters report.

According to Nina Graeger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, Trump also doesn’t fit the description that Alfred Nobel’s will demands for the award winner being someone “who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations.”

Nina, speaking with Reuters, said, “He has withdrawn the U.S. from the World Health Organization and from the Paris Accord on climate, he has initiated a trade war on old friends and allies. That is not exactly what we think about when we think about a peaceful president or someone who really is interested in promoting peace.”

Asle Toje, the deputy leader of the present Norwegian Nobel Committee, also said that lobbying or “These types of influence campaigns have a rather more negative effect than a positive one. Because we talk about it on the committee. Some candidates push for it really hard, and we do not like it.”
