The tragic death of Atul Subhash has reignited debates on the fairness and misuse of legal provisions like alimony in India. While alimony is intended as a financial safety net for a dependent spouse, it has also faced criticism for being a “reverse dowry” when misused.
Atul Subhash, a tech professional from Bengaluru, ended his life in December 2024, leaving a detailed suicide note and video alleging harassment by his wife and in-laws. He faced legal battles, including dowry harassment accusations and demands for significant alimony, which he claimed took a severe emotional and financial toll. This case has sparked discussions about the misuse of alimony laws and their impact on mental health and gender equality.

Gen Z gave a spectrum of opinions, with some Gen Z voices seeing alimony as essential for fairness and others questioning its potential misuse. Atul Subhash’s case serves as a stark reminder of the need for balanced legal reforms.
Alimony should not be labelled as a “reverse dowry” without context, but it must evolve into a gender-neutral, equitable provision. Ensuring fairness and accountability in its application is vital to prevent exploitation and uphold justice in a progressive society.
