The ‘what’s wrong with India’ is an online trend that has become the top trend in India, amassing more than three lakh posts recently. Many Twitter users have been flooding the platform with posts with this phrase and the Government of India also joined the lot.

How Did The Trend Start?

This trend started as an aftermath of the horrific gang-rape of a Spanish tourist in Jharkhand’s Dumka. The case came into light after the Spanish woman placed a complaint in the Hansdiha police station area, informing that she was on a bike trip of the country along with her husband, when the incident took place. The couple had reached Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles.

Thus, several posts were made by people that portrayed India as a bad country. Many users of X said that the social media platform’s algorithm is promoting such posts with the phrase ‘what’s wrong with India’ and showing the country in a bad light.

Adding on, several users also started posting videos of different countries, but with the caption, ‘what’s wrong with India’. This exacerbated the issue. For example, a user posted a visual from a station in New York but with this phrase.

Similarly, a netizen posted a video from another place but the caption said it was India.

The Indian government also dived into the trend by posting in their official Twitter account, but with a twist. In fact, it was not only the GOI who engaged into the trend, but also the Israel embassy in India.

Following the participation of the two governments, netizens also started indulging in the trend, but in a constructive way.

How Did the GOI Join The Trend?

The GOI came out with an innovative tweet by sharing pictures of four news reports highlighting the achievements of the country in the last nearly two years, in their official X handle, @MyGovIndia.

The clippings mention how India wiped out extreme poverty, became the first country to land on the South Pole of the moon, was praised by the IMF Chief for being the fastest growing economy and other countries emulating India’s advancements in digital infrastructure.

The government’s response was meant to show India in a positive light after a plethora of posts flooded the social media platform covering issues like corruption, crime and safety. The post has received more than 2 million views already.

Adding on, the Israeli embassy in India also joined the viral trend by posting a video featuring the Israeli ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, and other diplomats addressing the question ‘What’s wrong with India’? Ambassador Gilon portrayed India’s recent success in lunar exploration by humorously comparing it to Israel’s moon landing. The diplomats also praised India’s diverse culinary offerings, rich musical heritage, and plethora of tourist destinations, among others.

How Did The Netizens Engage In The Trend, Post This?

Many netizens supported the government by sharing pictures and videos showing India in a positive way, but with the sarcastic phrase, ‘what’s wrong with India.’

A X user shared a video of a foreigner who lost her wallet, which was returned by a man later. The lady wanted to reward him, but he politely denied.

One of the users shared beautiful photographs of the country.

A netizen  posted a sarcastic video with the phrase ‘what’s wrong with India’, showing a developed mall in a tier 2 city of the country.
