Breakfast Babble: Why The New Year Is My Favourite Holiday

-

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things, too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.

I love the New Year.

I absolutely do.

I mean, there’s something so magical about starting over once again. It feels as if the universe is somehow planning to give you another chance, another new year to live life like never before, that it somehow feels like a conspiracy. That too, a good one.

Just hear me out.

Ever noticed how winter brings a certain type of charm along?
The cozy mornings, the early sunsets, and, of course, the absolute bliss of drinking hot chocolate.

It somehow makes me a yearner. A yearner of the warm morning sun each day. A yearner of new plans. A yearner of the only time out of the whole year when all my friends manage to come together for holidays. It makes me a yearner for a fresh start.

One that has no baggage of the mistakes made the year before. No grief of a bad semester or that of a heartbreak. It is as if everything around me is allowing me to start fresh, like the year before never happened.

And then come the resolutions. A long list of promises we make to ourselves, quietly hoping for a change.

Be it better health or higher grades, socialising more or choosing to have a smaller, healthier circle, learning something new, or simply unlearning a habit that no longer serves. The New Year is about control. Control over the current version of ourselves. Control over the choices we make. Control over who we choose to be, irrespective of the long list of unfulfilled resolutions or unrealistic promises.

Because the New Year forgives.

It does not care that we are still procrastinating or messing up the basic tasks. It simply hands us over a brand new page to rewrite our story, this time being careful of the bad chapters.

And that is why the New Year is my favourite holiday, because despite messy deadlines and chaotic days, it still reminds me that there is hope for a better tomorrow, a better me, and eventually a better year.
