In a spirited display of parliamentary camaraderie, Rishi Sunak used his first official speech as the UK Opposition Leader to offer some playful yet insightful advice to his successor, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The exchange took place in the House of Commons following the King’s Speech, which marked the State Opening of Parliament and outlined the new Labour Party government’s legislative priorities for the year ahead.
During the customary debate that follows the King’s Speech, Sunak, serving as the interim leader of the Conservatives until a new leader is elected, began by acknowledging the swift changes in political fortunes. In his speech, he began by referencing his rapid ascent from a Junior Treasury minister to Chancellor and eventually to Prime Minister.
Sunak’s speech, while light-hearted, also carried a tone of respectful acknowledgment of the Labour Party’s decisive victory in the recent general election. He congratulated Prime Minister Starmer and expressed a commitment to holding the new government accountable while also being willing to support them in the national interest.

In his response, Prime Minister Starmer graciously thanked Sunak for his generosity and reflected on their exchanges since the election, which included a discussion about England’s defeat in the UEFA Euro final.
Setting the tone for his new government, Starmer promised a departure from divisive politics, pledging to focus on genuine service to the community over political self-interest.
The State Opening of Parliament, highlighted by this exchange between Sunak and Starmer, set the stage for a new era of political engagement in the UK.
With the new Labour government promising substantial change and the Conservatives ready to hold them to their commitments, the coming parliamentary sessions are poised to be both challenging and transformative. As the Commons begins to debate the proposals read out in the King’s Speech, the focus remains on the promises made to the British people and the actions needed to fulfill them.
