Apple, it seems, has not been having much fun with its recent releases. Even their flagship products, like the MacBook and iPhone, while certainly quite dependable, have been called out for not advancing as quickly as those of other brands in the telecommunications industry.
Their last few iPhone launches have been further trolled, where netizens claimed that Apple simply makes the camera bigger while increasing the price to unimaginable levels. Now, the company recently unveiled a new product called the “iPhone Pocket”, a small knitted pouch designed to carry your iPhone.
The item instantly became the butt of jokes online, primarily because of its basic design and its price point, of an impressive Rs. 20,000.
While Apple has long charged premium prices for its products, even loyal fans seemed baffled this time.
What Is The iPhone Pocket?
Apple recently launched a limited-edition accessory, the iPhone Pocket, in collaboration with Japanese fashion house ISSEY MIYAKE. The product, a knitted pouch, is described as a “wearable pocket” that can carry an iPhone, AirPods, and even regular, everyday items.
According to Apple, the item created in Japan is a “singular 3D-knitted construction designed to fit any iPhone,” and its design is inspired by “the concept of a piece of cloth.”
The company further stated that the item, set to launch on November 14, was “born from the idea of creating an additional pocket” and that its design “fully encloses iPhone, expanding to fit more of a user’s everyday items.”
The iPhone Pocket comes in two variants: a short strap priced at $149.95 (about Rs. 12,400) and a long strap priced at $229.95 (around Rs. 19,100).
The product’s design and its being nonsensically overpriced clearly had people take to the internet to either mock or troll Apple for launching it.
Tech influencer Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) in a X/Twitter post wrote, “Two hundred and thirty dollars. This feels like a litmus test for people who will buy or defend anything Apple releases.”
This sentiment was echoed by various others, with one user writing, “Will Apple fanboys defend this too? At this point, it honestly feels like Apple is just testing how far its fans will go to justify anything.”
Another brought up the artificial intelligence (AI) race and Apple’s participation in it, writing, “When the main tech bros are building AI models, Apple is playing with socks. What is happening at @Apple?” At the same time, another added, “Thought this was a parody.”

Apple isn’t alone in this, though, nor the first. Designer brands have a long history of selling ordinary-looking products at extraordinary prices. Here are some other examples of basic, general, everyday items that brands placed exorbitant price tags on just because of a label.
A sterling-silver paperclip marketed as a money clip. It performs the exact same function as a 2-rupee stationery clip but costs 7,500 times more.
Balenciaga, the Spanish luxury fashion brand, launched the Lay’s Handbag in 2022, as a collab with the US company Lay’s. Retailing at a whopping Rs. 1,800, the bags looked exactly like a chip bag would if one managed to use it as a purse.
In 2023, Balenciaga introduced the ‘towel skirt’, which, besides its concept, had a ridiculous price tag. Obviously, this was excellent fodder for netizens, who mocked it and created several memes on it.
A luxury boomerang that triggered outrage in Australia for cultural appropriation. Chanel said it was meant “for leisure,” though few could afford to throw it.
Marketed as “eco-washed organic denim,” these jeans were ridiculed online for resembling something you’d wear after rolling around on a field.
From Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton collection, this handbag literally looks like a tin of paint. Despite its weirdness, it sold out within days.
