Three IAS aspirants lost their lives after the basement of a coaching institute Rau’s IAS Study Circle flooded. This has led to many people raising protests against these coaching centres not taking proper safety measures and putting the lives of students at risk.
In the midst of all this, the silence of popular teachers and other coaching institute owners has been called out by protesters who are demanding justice for the IAS aspirants who lost their lives in this case.
What Did Drishti IAS Owner Say?
Vikas Divyakirti, the owner of Drishti IAS another popular coaching institute has finally spoken on the issue of student deaths. Divyakirti is considered to be a popular teacher, and many students protested outside his coaching institute and even his house asking for a statement from him.
In his official statement, Divyakirti speaking on behalf of Drishti IAS said, “We regret that we are late in presenting our view. We did not want to say anything based on incomplete information. We are sincerely apologetic for this delay.”
The statement further expressed its deepest condolences for the victims and that the centre is “completely with them in this hour of grief. If we can do something for them in any way, we will feel grateful.”
The statement also said that the anger of the students is justified stating, “The anger seen among the students regarding this accident is completely justified. It would be appropriate if this anger gets correctly channelised and the government issues certain guidelines for coaching institutes. Students Protest Against Silence Of Teachers
A lot of people have raised questions about the supposed silence of UPSC influencers like Vikas Divyakirti (Drishti IAS), Alakh Pandey, and Avadh Ojha.
Protesters camped outside Divyakirti house in Mukherjee Nagar and the Drishti IAS coaching centre on Monday night. They demanded that Divyakirti come outside and speak after his silence on the tragic incident at Rau’s IAS coaching centre and take accountability.
These influencers are specifically being called out because they assure students of turning them into IAS, IPS, doctors, engineers, etc., with their expensive courses that cost thousands and lakhs of rupees.
As per reports, one student protesting said, “Vikas Divyakirti and Avadh Ojha, despite being celebrated teachers, have not even tweeted in support of the students. Their businesses thrive on students, yet they continuously feed them false hopes.”
Another said how “Institutes like Vajiram cram 600 students into a single classroom. In case of a stampede, there’s no escape.”
According to a report by The Print, Sachin Shukla, an aspirant from Old Rajinder Nagar also commented “We have made them what they are. And now, when we need them, they are nowhere to be seen. They didn’t even post anything on the issue. If coming out of their air-conditioned coaching institutes is difficult, they could have at least posted on social media.”
Hardika Puniya, a UPSC aspirant also reportedly said, “We welcome those teachers who are here to support us. But we had expected that those who teach the ethics paper in classrooms would come and speak up for us.”
That is not to say no one supported the protest, many teaching members from online platforms like Sumit Rewari of PW OnlyIAS, Sahil, and Satvik of Vajiram and Amit Kilhor of StudyIQ, were seen to be present on the protesting site.
StudyIQ’s Kilhor speaking with ThePrint said, “The teachers are hopeful that the administration will respond to the aspirants’ demands. We have also demanded that all coaching institutes have a student grievance committee.”
So far, action against 20 institutes has been taken after the tragic death of three IAS aspirants – Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Delvin from Kerala in the flooding incident on 27th July.
