Remember your math teacher’s favourite punishment wherein you had to pull your ears and squat on the floor? Well, guess what! They found a scientific reason validating it. (Yay)
Using your hands to pinch opposite earlobes while alternating between squatting and standing up has now been declared as a mental energizer named Super Brain Yoga that unlocks your brain’s true potential!
What Is Super Brain Yoga?
Super Brain Yoga was developed by the Filipino esotericist, Master Chao Kok Sui. In his book, he explains how this simple 3-minute exercise can boost your grey matter and prevent the effects of memory loss, dementia, and even Alzheimer’s disease. It also increases mental energy, concentration, and decision-making skills.
It claims to be a scientifically tested practice that stimulates the left and right hemispheres of the brain to become synchronized, which relaxes the mind and optimizes the efficiency of the whole body.
Indian History Behind It
The history of this practice goes beyond classrooms and traces back to a divine act of reverence to Lord Ganesha (the Hindu god associated with intellect and memory) followed in Tamil Nadu named “thoppukaranam”. It can be observed that devotees who pass by a Ganesha temple while travelling, stop and perform the thoppukaranam before resuming their journey.
In terms of a method for disciplining students, sources say it has been practised since the gurukul system. Lazy students were “motivated” to study by forcing them to perform the exercise.

The Real Question – Does It Work?
Dr. Joie P. Jones from the University of California, who has done extensive research on the subject, explains that the exercise works by distributing energy to different parts of the body. The acupressure points in the earlobes stimulate neuropathways to the eyes, mouth, temples etc.
However, many are skeptical about this practice and its benefits. Some versions of the Super Brain Yoga advise youngsters to face East and the elderly to face North while performing the exercise. It is also recommended to remove any jewellery while practising it. Sceptics accuse these rules to be linking the exercise with mysticism instead of Science.
According to some reviews of the book, it contains only 2 pages about the exercise while the remaining 113 pages talk about the writer (which may or may not be an exaggeration). There are also those who disregard the existence of acupressure points.
Science or not, in an educational system where teachers are fast losing their power to chastise students due to meddlesome parents, this seems like a smart way to get that cocky kid in place without incurring the higher authority’s wrath.
