On Monday after nearly a decade serving as the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau announced that he would be resigning from his seat as the Canadian PM.
Having been losing voters’ support and falling in approval ratings for some time along with internal struggles witnessed in his own party, Trudeau announced this decision and also that he would maintain the position until a new prime minister is elected.
As per PTI, he said, “I don’t easily back down faced with a fight, especially a very important one for our party and the country. But I do this job because the interests of Canadians and the well-being of democracy is something that I hold dear.”
A leadership race is reported to happen within the Liberal Party for who will be the new Prime Minister of Canada and among the names being suggested for frontrunners is that of Anita Anand the current Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.
Who Is Anita Anand?
Anita Anand, a 57-year-old Canadian lawyer is currently serving as the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.
The former defense minister is part of the Liberal Party and is placed among the top 5 contenders by BBC and several other reports to replace Trudeau. She entered politics in 2019 after completing her Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies from Queen’s University, a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence from Oxford University.
She also has a Bachelor of Laws degree from Dalhousie University and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto. Beyond this, she’s held academic positions at institutions like Yale, Queen’s University, and Western University, along with also being a law professor at the University of Toronto.

Anand was born to Indian physicians, a Punjabi mother Saroj D. Ram and a Tamil father S.V. (Andy) Anand, and was raised in rural Nova Scotia.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was noticed for her critical efforts which included securing vaccines.
She also assisted Ukraine during its ongoing war with Russia in 2021 along with also managing a crisis in the Canadian Armed Forces. Anand while serving as the Minister of National Defence also implemented reforms that addressed sexual misconduct in the military. There were also reforms introduced that worked to bring cultural change to the Canadian Armed Forces.
During her time in politics, she also held several positions, such as Member of Parliament for Oakville in 2019 and Minister of Public Services and Procurement from 2019 to 2021.
