When it comes to the LGBTQIA+ community and the entertainment industry, there is still a widespread notion of people choosing to hide their sexual orientation to not offend fans, and audiences, or not to be stereotyped in the industry itself.
With the world changing and moving towards more progressive thinking though, some celebrities are open to speaking about sexuality as a thought and even commenting on their orientation.
In a recent interview, Bollywood actor Abhay Deol spoke about such topics and claimed that his thoughts could sound ‘controversial’.
What Did Abhay Deol Said?
In an interview with The Dirty Magazine, Abhay Deol opened up about his views on sexuality claiming that he sees it ‘as a spectrum’. He further explained, “I refuse the Western way of identifying sexuality because it’s so black and white. The Eastern approach is so different, it recognises the whole of us.
I don’t define my sexuality, and this might sound controversial, but for me, it’s not something that I think can be defined.”
Speaking on his understanding of his sexuality, Deol said, “I think it’s more for the other person’s comfort, so that they can put you in a box, neatly slot you. Why should I define myself in Western terms?
I have embraced all experiences in my life and I continue to do so. I don’t know how to label that, I don’t want to label that. All of us have a masculine and feminine within us, so, in my opinion, we are all they/them.”
The Bollywood actor further spoke about how he views masculinity saying, “I think masculinity, for me, is the ability to make people feel safe and included. As a man, I do feel like a protector and provider, maybe that’s individual or it’s conditioning, but there is a sense of taking charge and leading.
Having said that I would happily give it up to a woman too, if she wanted to take charge and lead, that’s also part of my masculinity.”

This did get a reaction from netizens and fans who wondered if Deol was coming out or what his statements meant. ‘Coming out’ is a phrase used by the LGBTQ+ community when they openly accept their sexual orientation, gender identity and more and state it out loud to people around them.
The process of coming out can be different for any queer or LGBTQ+ person, where one might just want to keep it limited to friends and family, while others might share it on social media and make it public, but it essentially means that they no longer let people assume them to be heterosexual, cisgender, and more.
One user wrote “Abhay is queer. I always guessed it,” while another commented, “Don’t use queer, he doesn’t like labels.”
On the other hand, some think this might be to generate publicity for Deol’s next film called ‘Bun Tikki’ which is directed by Faraz Arif Ansari, an openly queer and non-binary director.
User @eshanwithane also wrote, “I believe this is some LGBTQ series that the dirty picture is following with Sonam, Abhay n Konkona Sen being a part of it not all of them are queer I suppose?!?!?”
A lot also took issue with Deol using the phrase ‘Western terms’ in his comments.
