Oscar-Winning Movie Actress Arrested In Iran For Her Instagram Post

Taraneh Alidoosti, the lead female actress in the Oscar-winning movie “The Salesman,” was taken into custody by Iranian officials on December 17, 2022, after she made some comments over social media in favor of the anti-hijab protests.

According to reports by the state media, the Iranian actress, Alidoosti, was arrested because of her Instagram post that expressed opposition against the Iranian government and conveyed condolences for the first man executed amidst the anti-hijab protests. The Tasnim News Agency reported that Alidoosti was detained for “publishing false and distorted content and inciting chaos.”

Taraneh Alidoosti is one of the most talented and renowned actresses in Iran. Apart from her 2016 Oscar-winning film, Alidoosti also starred in several other movies and TV shows.

The 38-year-old film star was arrested a week after she criticized the Iranian government for the execution of the first man amidst anti-hijab chaos, who was known by the name Mohsen Shekari.

Alidoosti’s Instagram post shared on December 8th, 2022 was that of an image with a text that read, “Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor.”

In the caption of the above post, Alidoosti wrote, ”His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity.”

Media reports asserted that the Iranian officers arrested Taraneh because she did not provide “any documents in line with her claims.” She was accused of spreading false news about a countrywide protest without having any factual information.

Alidoosti’s Past Social Media Protests

The post for Mohsen Shekari is not the first one Taraneh Alidoosti shared on social media that supported the anti-hijab protests and condemned the government of Iran.

In 2020, Alidoosti severely criticized an Iranian police officer who assaulted a woman for taking off her headscarf. The actress was given a suspended 5-month prison sentence for her comments on Twitter.

Protests for Mahsa Amini

Iran has been in a state of upheaval since the anti-hijab protests, and the citizens became furious with the Iranian government, particularly after Mahsa Amini’s death. On September 16, 2022, the day Mahsa died, Alidoosti shared an image on Instagram with a text that said, “Damnation to this captivity.” In the caption, she wrote, “Don’t forget what Iran’s women go through.”

On the 9th of November, Alidoosti uploaded a picture of herself not wearing her headscarf and holding a placard that read, “Woman, life, freedom,” which is the main motto of the protests.

On Sunday, December 18, 2022, the day after she was arrested, her Instagram account with some 8 million followers was suspended.

Arrests Of Other Iranian Celebrities

The detention of the esteemed actress Taraneh Alidoosti has thrown light on the string of celebrity arrests in Iran, which include football players, influencers, film stars, and anyone who has raised their voice against the Iranian government.

Two other renowned female actors of Iran, namely Katayoun Riahi and Hengameh Ghaziani, were taken into custody by the authorities of Iran in November for encouraging and supporting the anti-hijab protests over social media.

Last month, an Iranian footballer, Voria Ghafouri, was also arrested for ‘’insulting the national soccer team and propagandizing against the government.” 

However, all three celebrities have been released.
