From gaining independence around the same time in the history to their common love for tea China and India share a very old history and relationship. India gave China Buddhism while China gave India silk. But recent more fundamental issue of trust and knowledge deficit between China and India has become a pre-eminent issue of the world.
The dynamics of ‘power’ in Asia keep oscillating between the two nations as both concentrate on their respective economic, social, military and terrestrial growth stories.
The India-China conflict in 1962 led to the first serious setback in bilateral relations. However, India and China restored ambassadorial relations in August 1976. A few decades later, the year 2011 was the Year of China-India Exchange. Friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields expanded.
Though, in recent years, many issues have led to conflict. Both countries are wary of the other’s growth and development. A Pew poll in 2014 showed 72% Indians have strong concerns on territorial disputes with China. 31% Indians viewed China favourably; 30% Chinese viewed India favourably.
So while relations were slowly becoming better there came NSG and now another setback that has made relations between China and India hostile.
