With a general lack of significant female role models and persisting stereotypes about women and technology, girls are made to feel unwelcome in the tech sector from an early age, both professionally and as consumers.
Maxine Williams, Meta’s Chief Diversity Officer, met with five female Virtual – reality creators, including Candice Houtekier, Ang’l Artiste, Mary Spio, Mary Matheson, and Michaela Ternasky-Holland, to discuss how their job and creative vision are beginning to transform the future of the metaverse.
These trailblazers are paving the way for other women around the world to explore what is really possible as we move toward the metaverse by using engaging technologies to create masterpieces, encourage social, as well as operate a business.
1. Candice Houtekier, Art Collision’s Founder and Director
Candice Houtekier has been exploring the metaverse since 2016. As a futurist, she investigates and builds new virtual realities in order to create, transform, and enhance the international art market.
In 2019, she founded Art Collision to combine art practices with cutting-edge innovation. The Toronto-based agency provides marketing, website design and management, rebranding, consulting, and creative services in digital, virtual, and crypto networks.
2. Ang’l Artiste: An Artist and a VR Creator
Ang’l Artiste is a mother, artist, and Horizon Worlds creator from Brooklyn, New York. When she isn’t painting or tattooing, Ang’l is conducting exhibitions in her virtual Black art museum and sculpting in virtual reality.
Horizon Worlds was a dream come true for her because she grew up playing Nintendo and The Sims. The Horizon Worlds community has made Ang’l feel better. As somebody who has battled social anxiety her entire life, socializing in immersive environments has given her the confidence to approach new folks and grow as an eminent businesswoman.
3. Mary Spio, CEO and Founder of CEEK
Mary Spio, a deep space inventor and tech engineer, grew up in Ghana and was 16 years old when she was sent to the United States. She is now the CEO of CEEK VR, a company that creates innovative information solutions and tools for supplying virtual and augmented reality experiences.

4. Mary Matheson, Film Director, And VR Creator
Mary Matheson is an award-winning creative director and executive producer of unique experiences. She combines cutting-edge technology (mobile, augmented, and virtual reality) with intimate documentary techniques to immerse the audience in the story.
She was the lead director for the groundbreaking GoogleVR 360 documentary series The Female Planet, as well as the recently released ten-part 360 New Realities series. She is currently co-directing an immersive VR experience about underground clubs where London’s Black community sought refuge during the 1980s Britain’s racism and violence.
5. Michaela Ternasky-Holland, VR Creative Storyteller
From dancing to working for amusement parks, Michaela Ternasky-Holland has always been an immersive storyteller. When she first learned about metaverse technologies as a journalist, she was ecstatic because it allowed her to combine different forms of media and test with extended reality (XR) story-telling.
Michaela utilizes a device network to collaborate with people from all walks of life to tell authentic socially impactful stories. CARNE y ARENA, an installation depicting the world of immigrants crossing the border from Mexico into the United States, was her most unexpected VR experience.
