BJP dropping many of its MPs from its Lok Sabha polls candidacy list has certainly got people talking. Some experts believe it is shuffling in the party while others have commented on how it is a strategy by the ruling party to bring in fresh blood.
In the midst of all this, one former MP’s tweet from a month ago is getting traction with the politician lashing out at the party for not giving him a ticket.
What Did The MP Say?
Rahul Kaswan, a two-term MP from Churu, Rajasthan, was shown to have been dropped from the list of Lok Sabha candidates from Rajasthan released by BJP. 15 candidates were listed and among them, Kaswan was among the five MPs including Devji Patel (Jalore-Sirohi), Ranjeeta Koli (Bharatpur) and Arjunlal Meena (Udaipur), and Kanakmal Katara (Banswara) that were dropped.
On 4th March, 2024, Kaswan posted on his official X/Twitter page writing “After all, what was my crime…? Was I not honest? Was I not hard-working? Was I not loyal? Was I tainted?
Had I left any stone unturned in getting the work done in Churu Lok Sabha?
I was at the forefront in the implementation of all schemes of the prime minister. What else was needed? Whenever I asked this question, everyone remained speechless. No one is able to answer this. Maybe my own people can tell me something…”
In another tweet he soon announced his resignation from the BJP party writing “Due to political reasons, at this very moment today, I am resigning from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the post of Member of Parliament,” and added, “Special thanks to my Churu Lok Sabha family, who always gave me valuable support, cooperation and blessings.”
While Kaswan thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda for the opportunity to serve in Churu Lok Sabha for 10 years, he was then reported to have joined the Congress party.

As per The Print, a BJP insider speaking on Kaswan not being given a ticket stated “Kaswan’s ticket denial is not linked to non-performance or anti-incumbency, but it was linked to his involvement in defeating former leader of opposition Rajendra Rathore from Churu. After Rathore complained to the senior leadership, it took cognisance of anti-party activities and he was denied ticket.”
This is not the only former MP that BJP passed over in this election circuit, as people also had opinions when news came out that Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of late Sushma Swaraj, will be replacing Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi and representing the New Delhi seat in the coming Lok Sabha polls.
Lekhi had represented the New Delhi seat for almost 10 years, however, her name was among the many missing names from the final list put out by BJP for the Lok Sabha elections.
As per an India Today report released on 26th March, it was said that till that time the BJP had declared 402 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections and since the first list that came out on 2nd March had dropped around 100 sitting MPs. Reportedly the tickets of 33 sitting MPs were cancelled in the first list, 30 in the second and 37 in the fifth list.
A lot of long-time MPs were also replaced with newer candidates. It is assumed that this is a calculated move by BJP to revitalise representation, address voter sentiments and avoid anti-incumbency.
AK Verma, Director, Centre for the Study of Society and Politics (CSSP), Kanpur commenting on this said “The decision to drop 23.5 percent of sitting MPs sends a clear message to non-performers and serves as a reminder to those who may have taken their victories for granted under the cover of Modi’s leadership.
While there is a strong desire for Modi’s return, dissatisfaction with many BJP MPs and MLAs persists among the electorate. Additionally, this strategy reflects an intention to rotate power between the organisational and governmental wings of the party, while also providing opportunities for political learning and empowerment, particularly for young blood and women.”
