Breakfast Babble: How Social Media Increased My Productivity During The Pandemic

Using social media to my advantage

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the inter-webs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always.

You may have presumed that I am a weirdo by reading the title. I mean, everyone just complains about how social media distracts them but here I am, preaching the exact opposite and saying that it has increased my productivity. Well, it is true.

Social Media First Hampered My Routine

Just like most people, I was also distracted by the Gram. I am not kidding when I say that there was a time when my Instagram usage was around 4 hours a day. But eventually, I got bored of it and uninstalled the application for 3 months. This was before COVID-19 came knocking down our doors and disrupting our lives.

Out of sheer boredom, I installed Instagram again. It’s not like I didn’t have work to do. I did, but I needed something to pass my time too and Insta seemed like the perfect destination. But this time, something unprecedented happened. I was not distracted. Rather, I felt motivated to work harder.

How Social Media Increased My Productivity

The advent of the pandemic was the time when everyone was trying their hands at something new. People showcased it all on their profiles (Instagram for hobbies and LinkedIn for academics). It motivated me to try something for myself too.

I started dancing again, an activity that I loved but never had the time or motivation to do.

It was around then that I was struggling with my own career choices. Confused about what to do or what not to do. Everyone on LinkedIn seemed to have it all figured out. It made me envious at first but eventually fuelled me to find a way out for myself too.

As a result, I interned in multiple companies which was extremely hectic yet rewarding for me. In the course, I figured that I want to do an MBA and work in the pharmaceutical industry thereafter.

There are multiple accounts that post aesthetic pictures of their work-from-home setup and that led me to do a similar thing. The social media influencers’ lifestyle seemed so glamorous that I sought it too and I knew I needed to work for the same. And I did!

In hindsight, I owe it to social media for having inspired me to come out of my comfort zone and push my boundaries. It insanely motivated me and I hope it continues to do so.
