Bizarre Things Indian Uncles/Aunties Have Said In Support Of Offline Board Exams During COVID-19 Wave

CBSE Board Exams

After much tension and wait the situation around the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) exams of 2021 have been made clear.

Today on 14th April the Education Ministry in a press release said that the Class 10 exams stand cancelled while the Class 12 board exams have been postponed.

This comes after a meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had with Education Minister and top officers today.

For Class 10th, the ministry has stated that “The results of Class Xth Board will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board. Any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allocated to him/her on this basis will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold the exams.”

The situation around Class 12th exams however will be reviewed on 1st June 2021, post which fresh dates will be announced around two weeks before the exams will start.

However, during this whole debate on what to do with the CBSE board exams of 2021, several older people had said some pretty bizarre things in support of offline exams.

1. This will impact the children’s future.

2. Affect their chances at studies abroad.

3. Without marksheet what will become of the students?

4. The board exams are sacrosanct to the Indian education system.

5. Online exams cannot be relied on as a higher number of students are prone to cheating in exams.

6. It would take a lot of time to make the infrastructure ready for online exams.

7. Exams are needed to evaluate the student properly.

One thing that bothers me is why exactly was this whole situation dealt with in this manner. I would like to ask what were the education board and authorities doing during the entirety of last year?

Did the authorities really feel that the COVID-19 pandemic would just magically vanish in the next year, to the point where offline exams could be conducted as they always had been?

With several researchers and experts constantly repeating the fact that the coronavirus pandemic will not be going away any time soon and we will have to deal with it for at least the next 2-3 years, why did the education board not form an appropriate format of examinations that could be conducted virtually.

An official in a report by The Indian Express was quoted saying, “CBSE is a national Board with students spread across the country. It’s not possible to conduct the exam online at short notice. How will the student familiarise themselves with the online pattern so quickly?”

This is what concerns me, that why weren’t appropriate measures taken to create a new system of taking exams whether virtual or offline where students are not being put at risk during the past year.

An year would have been enough time to explain and familiarise students with a new examination format.

In all this though, I do feel terrible for the students who somehow always have to bear the brunt of it all.
