All About The Latest Wellness Fad: Hydrogen Water And Do You Even Need It?

Hydrogen water

Hydrogen water has emerged as a trendy beverage, touted for its potential health benefits. Marketed as a way to improve athletic performance, reduce inflammation, and even promote clearer skin, hydrogen-infused water has garnered attention from consumers and influencers alike.

However, amidst the hype surrounding this product, questions linger about its efficacy and safety. Why is hydrogen water getting so popular? Does this really benefit the consumer or is it just a market rumour?

What is Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water is a beverage infused with hydrogen gas molecules (H2), often packaged in sleek drink pouches, aluminium cans, or available in the form of dissolvable tablets. Unlike carbonated drinks, hydrogen water does not create a fizzy sensation, as it lacks Carbon dioxide.

The small size of hydrogen molecules allows them to easily dissolve in water, purportedly offering antioxidant effects. While all water contains hydrogen atoms, hydrogen water claims to provide accessible hydrogen molecules that can enter the body’s cells and generate antioxidant effects.

Dr. Gagandeep Dhillon, assistant medical director, at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical System, explains that hydrogen water ensures the molecules remain intact by recommending consumption within a specific timeframe or packaging in special containers.

However, the accessibility of these hydrogen molecules and their purported health benefits remain subjects of debate among scientists and experts.

The Science Behind Hydrogen Water

The scientific evidence supporting the health claims of hydrogen-infused water remains uncertain. While some studies suggest potential benefits such as improved athletic performance and reduced inflammation, the research is limited and often contradictory.

Dr. Henry Jay Forman, an emeritus professor of gerontology at the University of California, highlights the disagreement among scientists regarding the efficacy of antioxidant supplementation in improving health.

Additionally, the translation of laboratory findings to human health outcomes is complex and not fully understood.

Dr. Tamara Hew-Butler, a sports medicine researcher, at Wayne State University, emphasizes the need for more comprehensive studies to assess the potential effects of hydrogen water on inflammation, ageing, and disease.

Despite anecdotal reports of benefits, including placebo effects, the scientific community awaits conclusive evidence regarding the efficacy of hydrogen-infused water.

Safety Considerations

While hydrogen-infused water is generally considered safe, concerns remain regarding its regulation and potential long-term effects. Dr Mitchell Rosner, a kidney doctor who specializes in fluid and electrolyte disorders at UVA Health in Charlottesville, notes that hydrogen water is not associated with serious health risks, according to available evidence.

However, the lack of standardized regulation poses challenges in determining the percentage of hydrogen in these beverages. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes hydrogen-infused water as “generally recognized as safe,” provided hydrogen molecules constitute no more than 2.14% of the drink.

Despite its perceived safety, hydrogen water often comes with a hefty price tag, raising questions about its value compared to other health-promoting options. Dr Forman suggests that investing in fresh fruits and vegetables may offer more tangible health benefits than purchasing expensive hydrogen water products.

Influencer Advertising and Market Size

The rise of hydrogen water’s popularity owes much to influencer marketing, particularly on platforms like TikTok. As influencers tout the benefits of hydrogen-infused water to their followers, they contribute significantly to the product’s visibility and appeal. The persuasive power of influencers in shaping consumer preferences and driving product trends cannot be overstated.

However, while influencers may extol the virtues of hydrogen water, consumers must critically evaluate the scientific evidence behind these claims before making purchasing decisions.

According to Firstpost, the hydrogen water market has experienced exponential growth, with a reported value of $309 million. This substantial market size underscores the widespread consumer interest in health and wellness products, particularly those promising unique benefits like hydrogen-infused water.

Despite the high price tags associated with some hydrogen water products, consumers continue to invest in them, driven by the allure of potential health benefits. However, as the market expands, it becomes imperative for consumers to exercise caution and discernment, ensuring that their purchasing decisions align with their health goals and the available scientific evidence.

Hydrogen water presents a compelling yet uncertain option in the realm of health beverages. While some consumers report subjective benefits, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy remains inconclusive.

Safety considerations, including regulation and cost-effectiveness, further complicate the decision-making process for consumers. As the market continues to grow and influencers promote hydrogen water, critical evaluation and further research are essential to elucidate its true potential and inform consumer choices.
