5 Reasons Why Shehzada Tanked As A Remake

The movie Shehzada starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon had been the talk of the town for some time now, with the duo on a promotion spree for the film.

Directed by Rohit Dhawan, and having a cast of Paresh Rawal, Ronit, and Manisha Koirala among others the film was said to be the remake of Allu Arjun’s Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapuramuloo.

However, just a few days after release and the numbers are not looking good for the film, with some reports even claiming that Aaryan’s Love Aaj Kal movie had done better than this film. But what exactly are the reasons for the miserable failure this film is seeing?

1. Not Old Enough

The original film, Ala Vaikunthapuramuloo, or AVPL as it is oftened shortened to is hardly even a few years old. AVPL was released in 2020, making it barely 2-3 years old, and still fresh in the audience’s mind.

Usually, remakes work when there is a significant time gap between them or they are vastly different scripts. Here neither of those things was the case and the original itself being still such a new film certainly made Shehzada almost unnecessary in the first place.

2. Easy Availability Of Original

Not just that but the easy availability of the original across various channels further made the Hindi remake kind of unnecessary. Especially with the recent boom of South Indian films people are no longer limiting themselves to movies only in their language.

With subtitles and Hindi dubbings being available more and more of non-Hindi films, it has worked to increase their watch-ability across regions. What it has also done is stop making people reliant on Hindi remakes of such films since they can directly enjoy the source material itself.

AVPL itself is available in both Telugu with subtitles and Hindi dubbed version on major OTT platforms like Netflix along with also being shown on TV channels.

3. Charism Of Allu Arjun

The humongous success of the Pushpa movie introduced Allu Arjun to large sections of new audiences who were pulled in by his style and charisma.

AVPL itself has also featured another such version of the actor, heavily relying on his on-screen presence and charm to sell an otherwise generic type of plot.

Kartik Aaryan, it seems, could not really bring about the same type of effortless charm as per the audience.

4. Postponing The Release

Many also felt that the postponement of the film felt like another signal that the makers knew the film was not up to the mark. As per trade Analyst Atul Mohan “Now a days, the audience has also become very perceptive. When the makers postponed its release by a week as a camaraderie gesture to Pathaan, they were quick to realize that the film wouldn’t be a great one. It sent a wrong signal to the masses.”

5. Buy One Get One Free

Another thing that probably hindered the success of the film was that news broke out how the marketing team of Shehzada was apparently offering a buy-one-get-one-free concept with the tickets for the film.

Basically if one bought a ticket of the film, they’d another one for free, but what this ended up doing was just making the audience cautious. It has been observed that knowledge of such practices only makes the audience think that the movie is not good in itself and the makers need to do all these things in order to get people to see it.
