Your Step-By-Step Guide On How To Get A Voter ID Card In India

Keeping in mind the democratic nature of the Indian Government, there is a political party present for each letter of the alphabet there is.

However, the usefulness of this diverse political representation depends totally upon US, the responsible citizens of the nation, who have become eligible to cast their precious vote in the Big Indian Hullabaloo aka Elections in India.

But before you walk down to your nearest polling booth to cast your vote, you would need to have a Voter ID Card.

What Is A Voter ID Card?

A Voter ID Card, also known as the Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is issued by the Election Commission of India to all individuals who are 18 or above.

The purpose of a Voter’s Card is to serve as an identification proof for the voter and help prevent cases of electoral fraud.

So here we present you a comprehensive guide, which will take you towards finally getting your own Voter’s Card!

Documents Required:

1. Any age proof document (such as the ones listed below):
Birth certificate
Marksheet
PAN card
Driving License
Aadhar Card
Indian Passport

2. One Residence proof document
Bank passbook/Kisan passbook/post office current passbook
Ration card
Indian Passport
Driving License
Income tax assessment order
Latest rent agreement
Latest electricity/water/gas/telephone connection bill for that address.
Any post/letter/mail delivered by the Indian Postal Department in the applicant’s name at that address

Eligibility Criteria:

All eligible citizens (who aren’t affected by bankruptcy, insanity or incapacity) of India who have attained the age of 18 years can apply for a Voter ID card.

Steps For Online Application:

1. Go to the National Voter Services Portal and click on the option, “apply online for registration of new voter ID” or “due to shifting from AC”.

2. Alternatively, you may directly go to the NSVP Form 6 Page.


3. Select the relevant language from the drop-down menu at the top and then fill in all the details they have requested. This includes your name, DOB, age, address, etc.

4. You’ll also have to upload the relevant documents (Age & Residence Proof and a passport sized photograph).

5. If you can’t complete the form in one go and wish to finish it later, you can click on ‘Save’ and if you want to change the entire information, click on ‘Reset’.

6. Once you’ve filled up the form, carefully double-check each and every piece of information and then click on ‘Submit’ at the end of the page.

Steps For Offline Application:

If you wish to do the deed, the old-school way you can also apply for the Voter ID offline.

1. You will have to visit the Election office in your respective state in person and then request for a Form 6.

2. Afterward you will be required to fill in the necessary details and provide all relevant documents such as age proof and address proof and a passport sized photograph.

After submitting the form to the office and after verification of all details, you will be issued with your Voter ID after a specified period of time.

Tracking Your Voter ID Status:

You can also track the status of your ID online, to make sure that you get it issued in time.

After the above-mentioned process, you will receive an email with a link that will let you track your voter ID application status.

It generally takes around 30 days for your application to be processed and for a voter ID to be issued to you.

If you applied for the Voter ID offline, you would have to take the following steps:

1. Visit the electoral CEO official website of your respective state.

2. Click on ‘Know the Status of Your Application for Enrolment’. A separate window will open asking for some basic details of the form such as the Form number.

3. You can also apply on the National Voters’ Services Portal and click on ‘Search your Name in electoral roll’ option.
