Lady Diana was a figure who women overseas looked up to for her charitable contributions to organizations and considered her a sister in solidarity.
The fondness for the princess was beyond their affinity for their own family members. The woman here in India shared similar experiences with Lady Diana when it came to an arranged marriage that prioritized lineages over love, the dominating in-laws who hawked tradition and thwarted individuality.

Like Lady Diana, many of these women in our country resonated with the hopelessness of aligning their identities with the obligations of wife and mother. They too gave up their whimsies and fantasies at the altar of marriage and sacrificed their life to act according to their duties.
Diana, who famously broke from the Anglican Church precedent and did not promise to “obey” her husband in the wedding vows, gave the brown women who were repressed by society a voice.
They too sought small acts of rebellion with Diana. Diana’s influence on these Brown women extended beyond their sartorial choices, a penchant for “Diana boy cut” hair and a desire to take up the teaching profession.
Diana’s vulnerability in disclosing her postpartum depression and her objective to leave a mark on the world resonated with the Brown women who viewed her as both a contemporary and a cautionary tale.
