What’s So Special In This Laddu From Hyderabad That It Costs More Than A 2 BHK Flat

The entire festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is certainly very interesting filled with interesting rituals, fun and unique ways to please and show worship to Lord Ganesh.

One of them is probably the Balapur Ganesh laddu that somehow always makes headlines either due to it size or how much the laddu went for in its auction. Laddus are an Indian sweet that are usually round in shape, and can be made from a variety of different ingredients.

From motichoor laddoo, besan laddoo, chocolate laddoos and the list is almost endless since its pretty much just means combining a bunch of different sweet ingredients and making them into small balls to be consumed.

The Balapur Ganesh laddu from Hyderabad is again making news with its size this year and that fact that it was auctioned for a whopping Rs. 18.90 lakh.

What Is This Balapur Ganesh Laddu?

This year’s Balapur Ganesh laddu weighs around 21 kg and was sold in an auction for a record setting Rs. 18.90 lakh, almost equivalent to a 2 BHK house.

This year the laduu was bought by Ramesh Yadav, a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council, and Marri Shashan Reddy, a businessman from Nadargul.

Apparently the bidding itself started from an impressive Rs. 1,116 and it didn’t take long for the bids to reach in the lakhs eventually going to the highest bidder. This is also the highest ever bid for this particular laddu in history.

Participants for this year’s auction also saw Kolanu Ram Reddy, a businessman and an agriculturist who’d previously won the laddu in 2019’s auction for Rs. 17.60 lakh.

The Balapur Ganesh laddu auction is actually an annual event that is held in the Balapur village in Hyderabad. The village is located around the outskirts of the city and this particular event marks the start of the Ganesh Nimajjan Yatra, or Ganesh visarjan or immersion process that would also bring an end to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

The procession would travel through several areas of the city and eventually complete the festival at the Hussain Sagar lake.

The auction is organised by the Balapur Ganesh Utsav Samithi and was first held in 1994 when the first such laddu was sold for a mere Rs. 450.

The laddu itself is made from pure ghee, dry fruits and placed in a silver bowl that is then put into the hands of the Ganesh idol. The preparation and donation of this particular laddu is done by Honeywell Foods and the auction amount is then put towards developmental projects around the area.

Businessmen, politicians and those wanting prosperity often participate in this auction as it is supposed to bring good luck to the winner. The auction was cancelled last year though since due to the COVID-19 pandemic all public celebrations were banned.

Kolanu Mohan Reddy was the first winner of the laddu and managed to win the bids for it for five times consecutively. His wins and claims that it was this that got him good fortune laid to the rise of the popularity of the laddu.

Apparently, the winners along with offering the laddu pieces to their friends and family are also known to scatter some bits over their place or business or earnings like home, stores, business houses, agriculture fields and more.
