What Is This ‘Film 300O: Porn’ Course That A US College Is Offering?

Film 300O: Porn Course

Colleges are often known for offering some quirky and unique type of courses, often going with current trends or relevant issues.

Of course, there are always the standard courses that practically every college has, but every now and then some institute or another will come out with those bizarre types of courses. In the past, we’ve had courses on memes, Harry Potter, Twilight, and many more other topics.

Now, a college from Utah, US, has come under the limelight for offering a course that would apparently have students studying pornography.

What Is This ‘Film 300O: Porn’ Course?

The Westminster College in Utah has come under the spotlight for offering a course called the ‘Film 300O: Porn’ that would have students “watch pornographic films together” as part of the subject. The course is being offering as an elective class and will be available during the May term.

A screenshot of the course description had gone viral that laid out exactly what all would be a part of it.

The description reads as “Hardcore pornography is as American as apple pie and more popular than Sunday night football. Our approach to this billion-dollar industry is as both a cultural phenomenon that reflects and reinforces sexual inequalities (but holds the potential to challenge sexual and gender norms) and as an art form that requires serious contemplation. We will watch pornographic films together and discuss the sexualisation of race, class and gender and as an experimental, radical art form.”

It seems though that the college is determined to offer the course despite all the backlash it is facing. Sheila Rappazzo Yorkin, chief marketing officer for the college also stated that “We have no intention to back away from offering this class.

By and large, the campus community is supportive of that academic freedom and Westminster’s commitment to talking about tough subjects.”

She also added the course would be taught by a “well-trained, published Ph.D. who’s taught classes like this and similar to this and subject matter along these lines. She has lots of measures in place if students are feeling either uncomfortable or whatever the case may be to leave the room and there’s no academic punishment for that. So she’s really aware of the sensitive nature of it and she’s a professional.”

Apparently, after a lot of buzz around the course, posts had come out that the college had apparently deleted the course, due to all the backlash. As per a report by USA Today, various media outlets had reported about this particular course like local stations of KSL-TV and ABC4 and conservative commentator Candace Owens had also spoken out against the course.

However, a Facebook post from 21st April 2022 claimed that the class had apparently been deleted by the college, reading “Since yesterday’s media attention from numerous sources, Westminster College has deleted their ‘PORN’ class from their website! Interesting.”

As per a fact-checking done by USA TODAY, it was found that this claim was not entirely accurate, the course listing had merely been changed with the course still being available on the college website, just in another location.

It was also found that the course will be taking place as scheduled as confirmed by Yorkin to USA TODAY. According to reports around 14 students have registered for this particular course till date.

Besides the change of the course listing the only other change was to the name of the faculty member teaching the course, wherein it was removed “due to fear of harassment.”
